What has CHL done to me?

Post by E150GT »

I don't know if anyone else is like me but today my sister needed help with taking some boxes to the post office. Knowing the post office is a no-no I unwillingly left my piece at home. Let me tell you, i didn't even want to go. I find myself not wanting to leave the house for a little bit without a gun. Anyone else feel that way or am I getting too dependent on this piece for piece of mind?

Well, once I suddenly realized that somehow or other I'd forgotten to load up, turned around and went back five miles to get mine so I'd say, yeah.

I just flew to NH for my son's wedding. I didn't bring either of my guns or my knife. I feel naked.
I'm driving back with my wife and just ordered an Izula to be delivered up here so I'll have SOMETHING to carry.

In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't brink my knife so I could avoid the $25 for checking a bag. I rationalized that I could use the $25 towards a new knife...

I used to go all kinds of places - Post Offices, Court houses, Schools, Pro sporting events, etc. - before I started carrying. I didn't worry too much about it then, so why should I worry about it now?

Why did you leave the gun at the house? Just leave it locked in the car while you're inside the post office.

I do not like to leave the house without my weapon.
That being said, I have not found any locations that I cannot carry (posted 30.06) other than gun shows, so rarely do I have to leave it behind.

The only 2 places I would like to carry, that I cannot, are my work (its in the car) and when I go to a bar with my wife. I do not drink when we go out, that does not bother me a bit, and she likes to have a couple now and then. My reasoning is simple, if something is going to happen, it will happen around a bunch of drunks probably. So there I feel naked.

I have grown accustomed to carrying and I really dislike the idea of going unarmed. So, E150GT, I'm with you there but I would have to agree with flb_78 on this one. I would have just left my gun in the car long enough to handle business at the post office.

I agree that you should never leave home without the gun. I would have locked it in the car. I have one of these car safes for just that very reason. http://www.center-of-mass.com/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have a "Biobox" in both cars, for the same reason.

I'm in the camp of carry 24/7 or guess right. The more places we can carry the better, campus carry, post office,
51% locations (if you're there to eat, not drinking etc). When I absolutely must disarm, I use one of these:

Secure the wire loop to metal under the front seat. Not the ideal solution but better than just placing it in a glove box or
console. Anything to slow down a BG that breaks into your car/truck.
Back to the original question: What has CHL done to me? Made me more alert to my everyday surroundings, made me buy a huge
drawer full of holsters, made me the owner of too many "camp" or "Hawaiian" style shirts to count, prompted me to renew my
NRA membership etc, made me a much better driver, taught me to not be confrontational unless absolutely necessary, given me
another excuse to go to the shooting range at least once every 2 weeks. That's the short list I can think of immediately......

That looks like the same safe. I guess Cabella's and Center of Mass buy from the same manufacturer. When you buy 3 or more at COM, you start to get a discount. I bought 4 of them. One for each car, except for my wife's truck that has two. This is because she likes to carry a Colt Police Positive 38 +P in the center console. The other one is for both her and my carry gun's if we need to leave them in the car.

That little safe has a remarkably large amount of room. I am able to put a Glock 26, LCP and Tomcat in them at the same time.

I just spent two weeks taking my grandson to Norway and Spain to visit his paternal grand and great-grand mother.

Not a good place for a Texan or a CHL. There were a few gun related conversations, but not good...

i am definetely a carry 24/7 guy. I "like" to post school/work/general shootins and then post on facebook that "what if one of the good guys were allowed to carry....all of my anti gun (or clueless about gun) friends/family are surprisingly silent.....

Yes, I feel naked when I dont have my 1911 on me. I did pay the $25 checked baggage fee and grumbled the ENTIRE time about it (american airlines). I reasoned that my life (or life of my family) was worth $25....but I wasnt going to be happy about it. the weird thing about the aa thing is that the lady (who had no idea what I was doing) asked to see if the gun was unloaded, so I opened the box and racked the slide back to show her it was empty. Lieing right next to it, was a full mag. How hard would it have been for me to just slap the mag in and mow some people down???? I just dont get peoples' "false sense of security". OK, fine, l wont have one in the pipe for the flight, but c'mon, let me carry it...or at the very least dont penalize me with a $25 checked baggage fee for it.

Ok, rant over (for now). ;-)

You know for some reason or another I thought even the parking lot was a no no at the post office. I suppose I am wrong. Happens frequently. I do need to get a safe foe the car. I usually don't even carry a bigger gun, but i just feel off without one in my back pocket.

There is a federal statute (somewhere in the CFR) against having firearms anywhere on post office property (low-level misdemeanor).

I won't carry into the building itself but the post office parking lot is one of the few places I adopt a "Don't ask, don't tell" philosophy. I put it in the glovebox before I get there and don't put it back in the holster until after I get to the next place I'm going. Nobody's the wiser
