I have noticed that there are at least a few backpackers on this forum - maybe one of you can help me out. I backpack a reasonable amount and am looking for a particular solution to making my 1911 accessible while I am out.
I carry a Canon 50D in a fanny pack set-up, as well as my backpack. I wear the camera to the front, and place the fanny pack belt above the waist belt of my backpack...
Does anyone know of a fanny pack that would accommodate my camera and my full-size 1911 in this configuration?
I have several Maxpedition bags. Most do have areas for CCW or the bladder pocket will double as a handgun pocket. They make a velcro holster that will retain your handgun. The problem is not all the bags allow easy access to the gun. Like on my back pack which I carry all the time as my EDC bag the pocket where your gun will go makes it slow to and hard to get to your gun. But I have one of the gearslingers and the CCW pocket is awesome depending on how you carry the bag. In my case I carry the bag slung (and not its not comming off) over my shoulder the bag to the front and on more hanging on my left hip. Think of a cross draw position. Works really well!

I remember seeing a modified diaper bag a long time ago. I would recommend modifying your backpack straps to carry the gun, much like the one-strapped backpacks that now have a cell phone pocket on the strap. Then you aren't adding more bulk or more bags and it would be easily accessible. Or you can get a sling pouch and carry it in front of the chest. Kinda like a fanny pack, but a shoulder holster pack. I have no experience with this, just throwing out ideas.

This might be a bit pricey but it looks like a winner for me. Kifaru (and Mystery Ranch) are all made in the US with all US components and have lifetime warranties if those are things that are important to you. right now I just open carry in the woods. I think they are in the process of making a smaller version.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I am looking into them. The real challenge is getting something that will handle my SLR camera and my handgun. I wear the camera pouch all the time that I am in the field, and it would be nice to find something for it that would accommodate my 1911.
