well when I was new to carrying I walked right into my post office to mail something while packing. As I am dropping the mail in the box it dawned on me and I was like 'oooooooh noooooo' and made a quick retreat.

There is a federal statute (somewhere in the CFR) against having firearms anywhere on post office property (low-level misdemeanor).

I won't carry into the building itself but the post office parking lot is one of the few places I adopt a "Don't ask, don't tell" philosophy. I put it in the glovebox before I get there and don't put it back in the holster until after I get to the next place I'm going. Nobody's the wiser
In a thread from a few months ago, this was discussed at length and somebody posted a letter from somebody in authority in the postal service. The letter essentially said that he didn't think that having a weapon in the parking lot was an issue. I may be mis-remembering this, but I don't think so.

At any rate, like you, I quit worrying about the parking lot. I used to worry about even driving through the lot to drop a letter in the outdoor box.
