Rules on Ammo

Please forgive the question if it seems obvious to the long timers.

Is the following statement true?
If I am forced to disarm before to entering a building that is either properly posted or is statutorily of limits; it is not a violation if I still carrying ammunition.

This wasn't specifically covered in class and I find no reference to ammunition in the appropriate PC sections. So unless 'handgun' is broadly defined in another part of the code as to include ammunition as well - it should be fine. Right?

ANAL, but legally, you should be fine. Although I wouldn't be surprised if someone made an issue of it. Maybe it could construed by an over-zealous guard as carrying "an explosive device".

When I am reqired to disarm I unholster gun, leave holster on belt, remove extra mag & lock it w/ gun too. Ammo is not required to be left but that is the way I do it.

Interesting you should mention that. A few years ago, after a coworker and I had gone to a conference, he noticed an empty shell casing lodged in the sole of his shoe. He had been to the range a few weeks before the trip and must have stepped on the shell. Anyway, those are the shoes he wore on both flights for the trip. He removed them and put them on the belt for scanning. Didn't get questioned once. I had a picture of it at one point, but can't find it.

FWIW at the entrance to the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont is a sign stating no firearms, ammunition, explosives or knives allowed. Besides being a court facility there is a jail on the premises also. They have metal detectors and deputies to check you. I don't think you would have a problem in a 30.06 location

I like to keep the ammo with me. If my car is burglarized, they only get the gun, no mags or ammo.

It's just easier to only disarm the weapon. Especially if its a quick trip - like running into the school to pick up the kids. Why work to clear all magazines from my person just to walk in to the building, walk out of the building, and then re-equip in the car? Unless, of course, I legally have to.

Much easier to simply pull the weapon out of the holster and then re-holster only the weapon when I return.
