Springfield Loaded Champion

Post by 9mmfan »

So I bought this thing last January. Last couple of range trips, have encountered a problem. Occasionally, the expended shell will not extract, but the slide will cycle, and attempt to feed another round. At this point, I must tension my thumb and pointer finger on my strong hand to hold back the slide and then use my rude finger to slide back the fresh round far enough to remove the magazine. By this point the empty casing has been pushed back into the chamber and has to be removed with a mild amount of force. It first occurred with some Remington FMJ, then occasionally with the trusty WWB. Is this an extractor problem, or could I benefit from a good chamber polishing? Any and all info is welcome. Seems like a gun that cost that much should not only eat anything, but reload as it goes.

Sounds like the extractor isnt strong enough or needs to be adjusted. It may be worn out also.

Take the extractor out & check it for major wear on the tip.
If you have shot it a LOT 5,000 plus you probably ought to replace it. If this is your carry gun definately replace it.
If it is only a range gun you can take the extractor out, bend it just ever so slightly to add tension. If this fixes it good. If it runs a short time & starts again replace the extractor.

Man, or rather men, this gun is all but brand new. I bought it last January, might have been the 9th. Have been able to shoot it six or seven times. Has fewer than 300 rounds thru it. Irritatied that it should be screwing up this soon. I was hoping that it was something that didn't require me to ship it back to SA. My pickiest guns are my two most expensive. That annoys the living heck outta me. Thank you all for your prompt replies.

Could it be possible you are limb wristing?, looks like you shoot a lot of wheel guns.....I have several Champions and they eat everything, never had a failure.

I was wondering if it could be user error. Just the fact that is is not extracting the spent cartridge from the chamber is what I am noticing. I don't understand how limp a limp wrist could cause that particular malfunction. Though I have noticed it happens more when my buddies shoot it. Couldn't begin to tell you if the extractor is malformed. Again, hoping it is something that does not require a trip back to Springfield.

Have you tried a different magazine? I have found this to be the case with some of my 1911.

Sorry to revive an incredibly old thread, have bought a Taurus PT1911 Duotone. Tried all four mags with both guns, to see if the new mags helped, and to see if the old mags recreated the problem with the new gun. No dice. The Taurus ran like a champ. Or rather, as I wish my Champ would run. Just got 3 Checkmate hybrid lipped mags in. May try to run both guns with them, though it seems time to test the much lauded Springfield customer service. Will admit to the internet wide prob of the right side ambi safety beginning to walk out on the Taurus. Not that big a fan of said ambi safeties to begin with, will prolly replace both with a Wilson, or something else that I can find on Brownells.

I had pretty much the same problem with my loaded champion.
Shell would come about half out of the chamber and the next would feed into it.
Problem started at about 100 rounds and by 300 it couldn't shoot a full magazine.

Called Springfield and they had me FedEx it in for repairs.

Took about 3 weeks and was just the cost of the shipping.

They replace the extractor polished the feed ramp and a few other things and haven't had a problem since.

Thank you for your encouraging tale of experience, Stormin. That is what I was hoping to hear, other than sacrifice a chicken spin three times clockwise, and that will fix the prob. I had wondered if it was a burr in the chamber or just a simple cruddy extractor. If you have a similar tale about a used Kahr K9 of indeterminate age, I would love to hear it.
