can anyone clarify this?

Post by biggyin »

Hey,

Just back from Cabelas and tried to purchase a shotgun for upcoming dove season, had my usual stuff CHL, DL, green card and three months of utility bills to prove residence.

My last statement is 7/28/10, I was then told that the last statement date had to be within 10 days of purchase and could not complete the purchase. Which I responded that would mean I could only purchase a firearm for 10 days of every month! Plus I do not have a more recent bill as they do not exist yet. They said it was a new ATF thing, which I have now checked their site and found no such thing.

Anyone else encounter this, or do Cabelas now only sell firearms to LEGAL aliens for 10 days a month????

Any views, help and/or clarification gratefully received!

Back in '85 I went to buy a rifle after work. (Swedish Mausers, on sale for $59.95!) I was in the Army at the time, and in uniform when I went to the store. I was told that I had to present my PCS orders as well as Military ID to buy a rifle. I corrected the clerk, presenting my valid Texas driver's license and identifying myself as a Texas resident. She insisted that it was the law. I told her that while there might be provisions for such a purchase by military members stationed in Texas but without Texas licenses, my purchase requirements were no different than other Texas resident.
I stayed calm, ,but the issue went to the manager.
I won.
Still have the rifle, too!
The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.

three months of utility bills to prove residence
Does the ATF realize that this is indeed the year 2010 and some of us have opted to receive and pay all of our utility bills electronically?

I thought all you needed was the number on your CHL? What brought up legal-alien status?

Why did you show them anything other than your DL and CHL? Doesn't the DL and CHL show your residence and ability to own a gun? Is there some special requirement to notify them of your green card status?

if you are not born in the US you have to give them your alien number and proof of residence with that. Even with a CHL.

Born in Kanada.
got here as fast as I could.

4473 for specifically asks if you are a citizen; you must provide an Alien number or I-94 number if you are not plus 3 months of utility bills to show residency; TX CHL and driver's license alone is apparently insufficient.

That's nothing. When I researched how to get a TX DL, I had to get a copy of my birth certificate from a state office in NC instead of the one actually issued by the county I was born in.

Color me shocked at insane requirements.
