Springfield 1911 Sights

Post by gwashorn »

OK, I got one of my new 45s in and love it. Got a Springfield PX9104LP and yes will take pics. comes with Novak trijicon combat sights. Low profile and great for CCW. Problem is old eyes. Used to the Fiber Optics I now use on my XDs. Truglow TFOs. They don't make them for the 1911. So looking for suggestions for a good set of Fiber Optics that are good for CCW holstering too. If they have Tritium that is a plus but the Fiber Optic is the first need. this is the place to come for advice! thanks

Gary (waiting to pick up new XD45 compact too that is geting TFOs)

I have the PX9109LP, and these are just great pistols.

yes, they do seem to be really nice pistols and can't wait to go to the range with it. So far only function tested it in my backyard when I got it. Looking at these [abbreviated profanity deleted] sights, it appears the Novaks are low profile for the rear just like the tritium ones it came with. the front sight however, seems to be more square up. I see there are different heights, and I understand that one. Curious about CCW and unholstering snags. My XDs have the TFO, yellow green combo. I see Novak has a red tube as well. I figured on staying yellow and green on this one since it is what I have on the others. Comments?

Well, I had the Novaks put on my 1911 back in May. Took it to the Arm Room to get them and install. Rear sights are nice but the front sight appeared crooked, not square on the slide. The Trijicons that came with it were fine. Asked about it and was told they have seen that before with the Novaks. So gave it back to get them corrected from Novak. Novak says, remove and measure them. It is obviously the gun they told the gunsmith. I said what? So I took pictures of it for them to send to Novak. Novak says, not our problem, it is the gun. The picture, to me at least, looks like the tube is not square to the mounting dovetail. So I had Arms Room ask again. I sent messages to Novak as well. Novak tells me the gun is crooked not their sight. Recut the slide and make it fit they said. I asked, why? The other sights were square. Why aren't yours. So taking them off again, checking the fit and such then they will contact Novak again. Am I missing something here? I have attached two photos of the sight. Anyone see anything that suggests the problem? Is it the cut on the Springfield? The Trijicon was not crooked like this. Appreciate any comments. Anyone ever had problems with service from Novak? thanks

It looks to me like you're right, but that won't help much.

Post again in the gunsmithing forum at http://forum.m1911.org . There is a ton of 1911-specific help over there.

Well, I appreciate it and first I just wanted to check with our distinguished group here that I was not crossed eyed seeing this. course the gunsmith agrees with me too. So before I go Novak bashing, I wanted some opinions from a group forum I was already involved in. I have not been to the other forum much. Thanks again.

AndyC wrote:I've seen that before - and it was me. The first time I filed on a 1911 front sight, I didn't get the rear side of the (male) dovetail on the sight itself quite square and true, so it sat exactly like yours.

You could tap the sight out and use a straight edge to check whether it's the dovetail in the slide or whether it's the sight itself - but I've never heard of Novak screwing them up like that. If the Trijicons fit fine, then I doubt it's the slide - I think whoever fit the sight didn't file true.

Who actually installed them, by the way?
I agree. An out of square file job on the sight base (or the slide) can give you the result shown in the photos.

I suggest removing the front sight and comparing it to the known good Trijicon front sight. You may need a micrometer to find the differences (although it looks out of square enough you may be able to see it with the naked eye). I'd bet money you'll find the problem right quick that way.

I appreciate it. I think Travis is having the gunsmith remove it today and recheck it all for differences in the original sights and the Novaks and with the slide. It was supposed to be a direct fit to the front. I have read questions about people being told different stories on the SA front sights and what cut they they have. This is a new PX9104LP Loaded Springfield. The Novak sight is SUPPOSE to be a fit without refiling, cutting to fit etc. I have never put one in myself so I am not knowledgeable on these differences. Rear sights fit and look great. The front slide cut APPEARS to be square on the slide and since the Trijicons were square I would think it is. However, as noted, if the dovetail of the sight is off a bit it will kick it out like that. I can not tell but on the pictures it seems the tube is not square with the dovetail mount, but that may be a deception due to light and the curves. anyway thanks.
