Good article and generally super comments from LEO, the one Fed put it all in perspective the few jerks out there don't care even if you are LEO at times. Just confirms their are good and bad on both sides of the badge. Thank goodness most are in our corner at least if you leave out a few states.

I touched on this in a PM to a member, but I think it would be beneficial for the curious CHL holder to contact their PD and ask how they recommend he or she proceed when contacted by a member of that agency. I think this conversation may open dialogue that would allow both sides to get to know the other's mindset better.

Another idea is volunteer to be a role player at your local PD or academy. This will let you see how LE responds to a number of different scenarios in a training environment. Also CPA's are a good learning tool too.

I've tried this with the Pflugerville PD but never got any response. I suppose I can try again and see if I have better luck this time.

In theory, that may work, reality on the two departments i have done this with (admittedly neither in TX) the answers I got sounded like they came from a Safety Steve training as a lawyer / DA/Prosecuting attorney.. not a law enforcement officer with any street time.

One response was "Sir, there is no need for a citizen to have a weapon, but if you do you should immediately tell the deputy you have a gun" I stopped right there and went and spoke to the Sheriff,, who had just issued me a CCL 5 months prior and authorized the use of his (and the local police) indoor range at the station (Military, assigned to duty's away from a military installation, so he let the 4 active duty folks use his range)

The other response was less hostile, but just as unhelpful.. I hope I hit only the only two departments with difficult non supportive of citizen CC, but I doubt it.

The two local departs to me now in TX, are very supportive of citizen CC, having done ride along with one of the departments several times, and now knowing two very good friends that are in those departments.. My opinion of LEO AND citizens (notice I did not say LEO VS citizens ) in this community is very good.

I like gigag04's idea though,, call um, go by, see if you can do a ride along (most don't I'm told due to liability,,,, we get a pass being Military and in the community with 100,000 Soldiers or so) or the role player deal.. If nothing else, you'll get to meet some of your local LEO.

Most agencies I know do allow riders. Only one that is a pain is DPS (personal experience), and I still got to ride when I went through their hiring process. I'm actually thankful it didn't work out - but I still respect troops.

See just goes to show, it's different everywhere. Killeen PD, no riders is the rule.. There are exceptions made (Military leaders by request is one) Copperas Cove PD, no riders.. never asked for an exception... but, hummmm, now that I know a CCPD officer who was a bud before that, prior military, and his wife is a KPD officer who can vouch for me as not a moron (well not clinically anyway) I might ask again.
Still think gigag04has a good idea.. if they say no, your no worse off.
