Obama administration to destroy 1 million M1 rifles

Post by flb_78 »

South Korea is wanting to sell almost 1 million M1 rifles and had previous approval to import them to the USA. Now the Obama administration is backing out of the agreement and are "working closely with our Korean allies and the U.S. Army in exploring alternative options to dispose of these firearms."

There are numerous references in that story to M1 rifles being able to take "high capacity magazines"

These are M1 Garands right? They take 8-round stripper clips, right? Not really anyway to force more than the 8 rounds into the gun is there?

Seems there are also M1 Carbines available, which I think take a 20-round mag, yes?

This is all so stupid. This story is tailor made for sound-byte driven media to go with the story "Obama admin. decides to not allow military assault rifles into country" and "NRA wants high-capacity military assault rifles let into the country" .... nevermind that these are historical antiques that take 8-round clips.

For once the media has the ability to use the word "clip" properly and what do they do? Call it a high -capacity magazine :banghead:

The current POTUS did not elect himself. He was elected as set forth by the law of the land...with the possible exception of that citizenship thinghy.

Now is the time for all good men (and women) to come forward...etc., etc. One small step would be to rally around our NRA.

Just think what a $50 per rifle import tax could buy. Oh, I forgot, this administration only wants to spend money we do not have.............

I don't know where Fox got it's 1 million figure from, but all previous reports were 86,000 M1 Garands, and 22,000 M1 Carbines. This has been stalled for 5 years. One one of the problems is that the weapons were "given" to S. Korea, and "selling" them back , whether directly or thru importers, is a bit unfair to the U.S. That said, I am opposed to any destruction of these rifles, and all the media hype is (as usual) not factual. Those weapons are already legal in all US states, except one I believe (NJ), and California and Mass permit only a ten round magazine in the Carbine. The Garand, of course, is only 8. This is yet another great example of media and gov't frenzy over weapons, the equivalent of which, you can buy at Wally World. :mad5

87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines

857,470 rifles. The title made me limit what I could put.

Originally, I had "Obama administration trying to destroy almost 1 million M1 rifles", but it would not let me post that long of an intro.

I think the "spokesman" for the State Dept. needs to go check his figures again. Those carbine numbers have never been used before. All reports I have read over the years say "22,000." But one never knows......

you are correct. I did a little googling and the numbers you quote seem to the be the standard. The almost 1 million number is only seen in the Fox articles. :tiphat:

Since these rifles where given to South Korea then it's already considered a monetary loss on the US end. If they are allowed to sell these rifles back to US citizens it would greatly help our ally and if there is a import tax imposed the the US then they can at least recover a portion of their previous loss. It's a much better alternative then just destroying them. This administration is always talking about how important it is to decrease the deficit. Well this was their perfect opportunity to make a dent. Also the argument they make by saying they don't want these weapons to go to the wrong hands is moot. I have never heard of a criminal committing a crime using a WWII antique. It's just the usual fear mongering anti gun propaganda.

It would be a complete and total outrage if these historical weapons were destroyed! I really hope that the NRA or someone, jumps on this quickly.

Maybe the TSRA needs to weigh in as well.

Sent an e-mail to NRA asking what was their response has been concerning the blocking by the state department. Just received this from them-

"The Obama administration has blocked an application by U.S. firearms importers to bring home over 100,000 M1 Garand rifles and M1 carbines. Although at first the State Department granted its approval for these guns to be returned to the U.S. from Korea, that permission was later revoked.

These firearms are totally legal to import. Replica M1 carbines are currently made in the U.S., and replica Garands have been made in the U.S. recently as well. But for many years, the State Department has defied the law (including a congressional appropriations amendment backed by the NRA) by using various excuses to prevent importation of these guns.

The NRA has worked with importers for more than 10 years to ensure that these historic firearms can be sold to U.S. shooters through commercial channels, and will continue to support their lawful importation."
