How hot is hot to cook off powder,, hotter then it will ever get in Texas or anywhere in the world while people are alive. A cook off is not a problem.

Another option for firearms insurance is Collectibles Insurance. http://www.collectinsure.com/ I found the rates reasonable, the coverage includes ammo (which the NRA cover excludes) and you don't have to give them an inventory, you just have to keep one. Mine's in my safe deposit box.

The only time I see it as a risk of an insurance company denying the claim is if you are breaking the fire code. The national standard fire code used in most states sets residential limits for primers and powder. The code primer limit is 10,000 primers or less. The code powder limit for smokeless or black powder is under 20 lb for any storage. If you have 20-50 lbs of powder, it requires a wooden locker with wood walls at least one inch thick.

If you are over 50 lb powder or over 10,000 primers and burn your house down, you are dealing with a fire code violation. I would assume that is grounds for denying the claim.

BTW, there is no limit for small arms ammunition, so if you have more primers or powder than the limit, the answer is to simply get them reloaded into ammo! :cheers2:

When we built our home last fall, I shopped homeowner's insurance since we sold our home and were living in an apartment with renter's insurance while they built our new home. Here are the questions I was typically asked by the companies or websites:

1. Do you have a pool with slide?
2. Do you have a trampoline?
3. Do you have any skate or bike ramps?
4. Do you have dogs? If so, what breed? (they now have "restricted" lists)

No questions regarding firearms or powder....
