Opinions on US citizenship question

Not in Texas. There are only two recognized modes here: Texan and "You're not from around here, are ya?" You'll be in fine company.

Just remember that on the form the nationality is British :)

I had to laugh at my citizenship interview when the interviewer asked about the Boston Tea Party. He was laughung too. He was a pretty friendly guy. He was not the usual little Hilter that is usually associated with the USCIS. I believe he would even be a 'nice chap' to a Scot too!

O.K., you are not English. I have had many English friends and co-workers. One of them actually thanked me personally for the Marshall Plan. He was 6 years old when the war was over, and remembers not only the bombing but the rebuilding period quite well and where the money and other assistance came from. I've never had a Frenchman thank me for anything.

In truth, that's not a joke. I remember when we were doing the paperwork for my green card, the feds were looking for "British" or "UK". But, when I came to fill out my first 4473, the FFL called it in and they didn't want either of those, because their system didn't have a tick box for them, but did for "English". Same when I got my prints for my CHL.

Seems to me that one, less well known, advantage of naturalization is no longer having to keep track of what different agencies call your country of birth.

That is unfortunate. I know that the Military in general does the following:

- allows non-citizens to enlist (cannot be a Commissioned Officer)
- subtracts your years of previous active duty from your actual age should you come back into service

It would be nice if they would let someone like Andy deduct his years of active duty from his age, and join the US Military.

Yes it would. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that they only count years of active duty in the U.S. Military. Also, until he takes that citizenship oath he would not be eligible for any MOS that requires a security clearance. I suspect that would eliminate most, if not all, of the jobs he would be interested in.

What about KBR or other contractors? The pay is better but it still ain't the same, but it is an option.
