Need Advice - Selling in An Online Auction

Post by skub »

I am going to be listing a gun on an online gun auction site, and am looking to benefit from the experience of folks here. :bigear:

The questions that come to mind are:

1. How long should I list it for?
2. Is there a "better" day/time to end the auction?
3. What do I need to consider re: minimum bids?
4. What are the strengths/weaknesses of each site?

There may be other things I need to think about - these are what come to mind.

Thanks for any experience you can share. :tiphat:

I've also had significant luck selling through TexasGunTrader.com.

I'll second this option. As well as selling in our own forum.

Another thing to consider is how do you want to be paid?

Paypal won't allow firearms transactions. I've used Gunpal once, as a buyer, but have no experience with them as a seller. Then there's money orders etc.

I re-second this forum for sales. If you go the online route I have bought several firearms on GunBroker, never sold any. All were good experiences. I have viewed several of the other online auction sites and I think Gunbroker has more viewers than all the others combined, so you'd maximize exposure. Most of the auctions I partook in were 6-10 days. If it's a sought after weapon you'll see some activity pretty quickly. There's no sniping on GunBroker and they have a 15 minute extension if someone bids at the last minute giving the previous bidder a chance to increase.

Set a realistic starting bid, maybe the absolute lowest you will go. I find it extremely annoying to bid on a gun with such a low start bid and high reserve that you can't ever actually buy it. I have no use for reserves anyway, dont see the point if you just start as low as you will accept.

It's true, they will not.

However, I have used it to purchase a 'lead accelerator' before :thumbs2:

Thanks for the suggestions. They have been helpful.

As for posting it on this site, I have had them on here for a little while, but have not gotten any interest on them. I know, that could mean that they are priced too high, but it could also mean that they are bolt action rifles on a handgun forum - i.e.,this is not the best market for them. One of them is a pre-64 Winchester .243. The price for it is high, if you are just looking for a .243, but according to the appraisals I got, is a fair price for someone who values the pre-64 receiver. I based my price on three independent appraisals, so I want to make sure that I have done my best to get it in front of the right audience before I start cutting the price very much.
