Once you go 1911, can you ever go back?

I grew up poor. All I could afford was a Glock. It was good. It was all I had.

Then I shot a friend's 1911. It was really good!

But I'm afraid to buy one. I'm afraid that if I get a good 1911, I can never shoot any other pistol ever again. Is it possible to own a 1911 and still carry/like something like a Glock? Or will I just be ruined forever and destined to trade in all of my other pistols to collect more 1911s?

For 40 plus years I have owned and carried 1911's, UNTIL I traded for a HK P7 PSP. I still have some 1911's, but I just traded for the HK P7 M13 and I do not ever see myself carrying a 1911 again.

Its possible that you'll become so enamored with the 1911 that you would forsake your other pistols. But hey, its a wonderful "problem" to have.

For me, no matter what holster setup I used, the 1911 carried like a boat anchor by the end of the day. I still carry .45 ACP; it's just not a 1911.

I have a lot of pistols that aren't 1911's, but have you ever seen me carry one, or even shoot one?

Seriously, although I like everything about 1911's except the cleaning time, I believe it's the trigger that gets most people hooked. Once you have a good 1911 we a good trigger pull, nothing else compares. Seeing how fast you shoot with your Glock, you'll get really spoiled to it in short order.

Its an addiction...My wife got hooked on them when she shot another man's 1911...

To feed that addiction, I stole my Dad's .45 His second favorite gun...

Thread reminds me of one of my very first CHL students ... An-ex Air Force pilot (now flying for American). A die-hard 1911er. Only his 45 malfed once during first CHL test in 1995 and he shot "only" a 245.

At the time, my brother was shooting next to him. Brother had borrowed with my Glock 23 - and aced the test with it. We subsequently ribbed the pilot a lot about his "trusty" 1911 not going bang "every time" and it hurt his pride a bit. A few months later he was back at the range and I offered to let him just try shooting the Glock and see what he thought.

Next time he was out at the range, he was the proud owner of a new Glock 23 - and had ordered 1000 rounds of Gold Dot over the internet. Said he was quite disappointed that he'd waited so many years to check out "the tupperware". So, hey, the "addiction" can go BOTH ways.

Face it, Ol' SlabSides is fun gun to shoot. And I get 2 reactions at the range. #1 "Oooh, is that a Kimber!?" and #2 "Ohhh, I don't want to shoot a .45, they are scary."

Usually, just like last time I went, they end up shooting it and then commenting on how some bodypart may now be considered 'acceptable for trade' in obtaining a 1911.

I try to be careful. 2nd time I went to the range with my Warrior, I was at the 3yd target next to this gentleman. I looked at his target, and he looked like he was shooting 00 at it. Shots all over the place.
So, he comes over, and says #1 & #2 above.
I hand him an 8rnd mag, and he shoots my target. Gets a pattern the size of a tennis ball. Puts my gun down, looks at the target, glances over at his, and then exclaims "I bought the wrong gun!"
Ooooh, I felt bad. He had just purchased his Taurus .40 something or other, and now he was not happy with it.

Truly though, all guns are different. Its like old cars, if you could own a Camaro & a Mustang, wouldn't you?! Heheh.

I also enjoy the idea of carrying the pistol my dad did in Okinawa at 20 yrs of age. I have his picture pulling MP duty at 19, and that aint a polymer pistol on his hip.

I also started w/ Glocks, and then I bought my 1911s. Certainly, the 1911s are much easier to shoot than even my Glock 19 (9 mm), and I think it has something to do with its SA trigger, weight, longer barrel, grip (which fits me really well).

For a while your prediction almost came true for me, where I was contemplating of selling off my Glock. (Actually, I've been thinking about selling off my Glock several times, like when I got my HK, when I got my Sig...) Anyway, each time I decided to keep it for some unknown reason.

Now, let me warn you: If you start shooting 1911s exclusively, your Glock shooting is likely going to suffer. I did that and I couldn't shot my Glock very well (which also helps push me into wanting to sell it). And the reverse is also true, recently I want to try my hand at th GSSF, so I started shooting my Glock exclusively, and I find that I can't shot the 1911 too well any more. So, I seems to be unable to learn to excell with both at the same time. But of course, you may be able to.

To concisely answer your question, I find the 1911 and Glock shooting not entirely compatible.

1911's are pretty guns. But pretty only goes so far. Its a concealed weapon after all. The most important thing to me in a hand gun is reliability. A parallel to Murphy's Law states "If it will malfunction it will at the worst possible time." I'm not expert but it doesn't sound to me from what I've heard and and seen that many 1911's are all that reliable. A real pretty and 'expensive' handgun isn't one I'd be likely to carry anyway.

I like shooting more than I do loading. Although 7 or 8 rounds to a magazine will keep the Brady's happy. Probably cost as much much to load a 1911 mag as it does a 9MM.

I like plastic. It works, Its tough, and its light. and more comfortable when pressed against skin. Yeah it's usually not so pretty. My next gun purchase probably won't be plastic, but I don't consider plastic a negative.

Don't get me wrong it's not that I think 1911's are a poor choice, its just that they aren't my cup of tea.
