New Glock .40 S&W owner

Post by baraco01 »

Hello ladies and gents! I need advice on my new glock 23. Having read a lot of things regarding ammo causing kb's... I am wondering what kind of factory ammo (FMJ) for target/practice I should use. Are the winchester 165 gr FMJ safe to use? How about the federal .40 (the ones that they sell at walmart)?
Also a lot are said about getting aftermarket barrels since these barrels are tighter or have better support. If so, are there any specific brands you can suggest?
I would love to keep this new toy so I am into learning as much as I want to prevent kb's.
right now, the brands I can easily get as far as the aamo is concerned are winchester (white box) fmj and federal fmj.
Thank you in advance.

Wal-mart stuff runs perfectly fine. KB's don't happen with factory ammo and stock Glocks - end of story. Every KB has been related to reloads or non-factory modifications.

BTW, Congrats on your new G23 -- I just got a new G23 (Gen4) myself, and I haven't even taken it out shooting yet!! (I suffered some nasty hearing damage at last weekend's 3-gun match due to an accident, so I'm trying to give my ear a "rest" -- driving me nuts too :cryin )

Oh, about aftermarket barrels -- don't get them unless you REALLY need to shoot things like lead bullets or reloaded ammo. If all you're going to shoot is factory target and defense ammo, the factory barrels will give you great accuracy. Polygonal "rifling" in Glocks is actually quite nice -- don't let anybody tell you otherwise! I have a non-factory barrel in my Glock 35 that I use for competition (because I shoot reloads), but I see no need to swap out my G23 for personal carry (because I only feed it factory ammo).

"KB" is the dreaded KaBoom that happens when substandard ammo (using bulged or otherwise damaged cartridge casings) in the high-pressure .40 S&W caliber is used in an unsupported chamber. The case ruptures and explodes in the chamber with a KaBoom!

I've had a Glock 23 Gen3 since March. It is the only gun I carry. I've put nothing but Federal 180-grain ammo from WalMart through it at the range. I carry Speer 180-grain Gold Dots in it for carry.

Never had any problems with the gun or ammo.

Thanks for the fast reply. Now I am more comfortable w/ the pistol. I never had problems w/ my other ones. They go bang every time the trigger is pulled. And yes, I only shoot factory target and defense ammo. After I fire a couple hundred rounds on my 23, I would use it as my edc. By the way I got the 3rd gen for my 23. My 19 is a 4th gen though. Again, thanks.

@ VIC good to hear that federal ammo from walmart will be fine w/ the 23.... reason behind is walmart is only half mile from where I live and its the easiest and fastest way to get ammo for me. They have the winchester fmj, federal, and remington. Have you ever tried the remington jhp and fmj's?

Kick back? Known Bad? I dunno.

I have a glock 23 gen3 and have run quite a few different brands of factory ammo and no problems. I typically get the Lawman ammo at GT, speer makes it and I think we typically get 165 grain.

I have shot reloads as well and had no problems.

edit. Wow, I am late on the reply. Dang work interrupting my forums lurking.

There is only one thing that you need to remember about any Glock, don't shoot any lead. Polygonal rifling does not like lead.

Do not shoot any reloaded ammo, that is where almost all of the problems with 40 Glocks have happened. Other than that, any factory load is fine. I have a 23 that I bought in 97, it has over 6000 rounds thru it with zero problems.

As far as the factory ammo you used, can you name some so I'll know which ones are okay. Thanks.

Alright, this is going to once again reveal my ignorance.

I have a Glock 22 and 27 that fires .40 S&W.

I googled the 22, 23 and 27 and noted that only the 23 mentions S&W.

What is up with that?

Sure. Any that I could find. WW, Remington, S&B, Federal, even some Monark. Really any factory ammo that you can buy in the US will be fine. Back in the late 90's I bought several cases of S&B and it ran great.

Just go to Walmart and buy WW white box, either the 165gr of the 180gr and you will be fine.

The 23 was the first Glock chambered for the 40 S&W I think. That is probably why.
