Anyone live in Galveston?

Post by killerfly128 »

I am going to be going on a cruse in November and would like to know if there are any forum members in Galveston. I am a little apprehensive about leaving my car at the port, I feel like it is much like long term airport parking and would like to keep it safe. If there is a forum member that is able to provide an insight or might know of a safe place to park I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

Galvestonian here. I believe that the parking provided by the port (I say provided but they still charge you a fee) would be safe as it is fenced in and I have never heard of any mischief happening on those lots. If you need a safe place to store your weapon, seamusTx has offered to store a weapon in the past (if I'm not mistaken) or maybe I could arrange something if you would rather not leave it in your vehicle, although I don't perceive very much of a risk at the parking lot. Do you have some means of securing your weapon in your vehicle like a locking cable box? What are your departure/return dates? :txflag:

Dont have a lock box for the car, never needed one. I plan to leave November 14 and I will be back November 21. I thought about having my PD employed wife contact the Galviston PD and see if there is someway we could leave the car there. I really hate to fork out $70 for parking ... flippin robbery.

Back to the carry pistola ... I know I want to carry on the drive but feel real weary about leaving it in a car cable box or not. Grrrrr .....

The cruise terminal parking lots are pretty much the only game in town.

The cops do not have a secure parking area that I know of. Even if they do, you would then have to take a taxi to the cruise terminal to the tune of maybe $20 each way.

Ugh ...

I dont mind doing the taxi thing if it means not parking my car in long term parking. I may just break down and try to find somewhere to store my weapon down there and park in long term parking.

If you dont mind swinging thru Alvin I have a fairly large safe under video surveillance you could store it in. Plenty of other guns in there to keep it company while you are away.

I've done a few cruises out of Galveston. The "official" port parking lot is easy to use and there is shuttle that picks you up and drops you off. Drop your passengers and luggage off at the port and then drive the car to the lot, pay in cash (last time it was cash only, maybe it's changed?), park, mini bus comes around and picks you up and whisks you away to the ship/port. When you exit off of I-45 you'll see some other parking operators, but that was before the hurricane, not sure if they are still operating or not, Jim would know, I'm sure. Another option, drive down a day early and get a hotel. Many hotels down there offer a cruise parking package - meaning that you stay/pay for a night and the next morning they'll drive you to the port and then pick you up, you leave your car there. An idea - as a guest you should be able to use their hotel safe/deposit box, have them hold the weapon (in a non-descript box, of course).

The privately owned parking lots are back in business.

You can get a small break on the rate by paying in advance with some of them:
http://www.google.com/search?q=galveston+cruise+parking" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't know of any hotel that has secure, guarded parking. Most just have open lots that anyone can walk into.

I am willing to secure items if you want to trust me. I'm not going to take something like the Hope diamond or a super-deluxe Wilson Combat customized pistol for safekeeping.

Great!

I think I am going to use the Park N Cruse that was in that link. Seems to have decent reviews and its close. I would rather pay a family owned business to park rather than the terminal. All I will be bringing is a Sig 229r or a Glock 23 so its nothing high dollar. Ill have to get with ya im PM soon if you dont mind hanging on to my pistola while I cruse my sobriety away.

Sure.

When you see how much the drinks cost, you'll probably take the pledge.

Not our first cruse ... I found that drinking Fosters on the boat was much cheaper than my normal poision of choice.

I guess I'm ignorant, never been on a cruise. just about every hotel or resort that I've ever stayed in had a safe in it. I would assume that the state rooms on cruise ships would to. Why wouldn't you just take your pistol with you and lock in your state room when you were going to drink. Again, I've never been on a cruise, but I have heard of pirates.

Cruise ships have a higher level of security than commercial airplanes. They X-ray your luggage. You cannot get a weapon on board. They also prohibit bringing booze and who-know-what-else.

Sounds like you already found your answer, but.... my wife and I have gone on cruises out of G-ton, and used the terminal parking with no ill effect, including leaving firearms in the car. Get one of those boxes with a tether and anchor it to (and under, if possible) to the spare wheel in the trunk. Some times there is a cutout in the trunk that lets a cable loop through.

I have my doubts as to whether the cruise ship security is really better than air, but they do check. Also, getting caught with a gun in a foreign port might turn out to be very unpleasant.

Do not even venture into ports with a folding knife.

Mrs. Anygun and I made a stop in Jamaica on our last cruise out of Galveston. The Jamaican customs had set up a metal detector you had to go through to get back on the ship. They confiscated my Gerber knife. I made the mistake of mouthing off my displeasure when the Jamaican agent pocketed my Gerger. Mrs. Anygun was sternly warning me to shut up as she pushed me along towards the ship. There was nothing anywhere that said folding knives were forbidden. Jamaica is a dump of a country and I care not to ever go back.

Be careful in foreign countries. Tourists are fair game.
