Cabinet for a Gun Safe

Now that we have our CHLs, my wife and I want to move a 20 gun safe from a closet to a larger game room. Its a nice safe, but my wife says it looks better in the closet because it doesn't fit with the furniture in the game room. We would like to put the safe in an armoire-like cabinet so it blends into the room better. We have been looking for old wardrobe armoires, but have been finding only units that have TV shelves and storage drawers.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes room funiture desinged to hold large gun safes, similar to old wardrobe armoirs? Or, is there any other type of furniture that is designed to camoflauge a large gun safe, yet provide access to the safe? Any thoughts would be helpful.

I would talk to a custom cabinet maker. He should be able to design you something that looks like a built-in wall unit.

Talk to a carpenter and you can get it built to your specs, have it finished how you want and probably save some money. You would probably have to customize anything you bought by having the "floor" of it removed.

Keep looking. I have seen relatively unmolested armoires that are only slightly off the floor and could be disassembled and put back together over a safe that sets on some sort of platform. Don't know where you are located - there are tons of places round the DFW and East Texas area. Prices are going to vary depending on the store you are in, or if you are at some trade day to do. Shouldn't have to pay more that $150 to $250 for one big enough to cover your safe. Might even get lucky and find one of the armoires that has pins and comes apart for moving/traveling.

I would be careful about going too cheap on this. You want real wood that is sealed to the elements, not cheap particle board, MDF or OSB. You also want to make sure that you can open the door of the safe to, or almost to it's maximum. Makes me wish I had my tools in a workshop instead of in storage waiting for one.

Good info whoever said to talk to a carpenter and whoever said talk to a cabinet maker. I am not a pro in either discipline, but my hobby has allowed me to make some good looking cabinets and do some fair carpentry.
