Arizona Man Arrested for Guns in DC

Post by skub »

An Arizona man was arrested after police found guns in his truck on the Washington Mall. Based on the picture, looks like the guy is an RVer.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/11/04/ar ... latestnews
The truck was parked along the National Mall near the National Air and Space Museum Wednesday afternoon, when an officer noticed something suspicious inside.
The cynic in me has to wonder if the most suspicious thing about the truck was its Arizona tags, but I guess it could be that in that kind of area, the police could be very vigilant, and checking in all the vehicles. Anyway, it's sad that a guy got arrested for simply having guns in his vehicle.

A question for you legal guys - Is this the kind of case that could be used to challenge local DC laws in light of the recent SCOTUS ruling?

Good question. Isn't there something about a Travelling exemption?

That traveling exemption specifies unloaded guns in a locked hardcase, ammo store separately.

Sounds like this guy was careless. or clueless

I hope he has a big legal fund and planned to get caught to challenge the law.

Otherwise he sounds like a fool.

The truck appears to be sagging something fierce (I believe that's the scientific term), possibly indicating that the truck and/or trailer is heavily laden with who knows what.

And is it just me or is there tinfoil covering the trailer windows?

Except for the window showing the firearms apparently...

Schlosser says the unidentified man would be charged with unregistered ammunition and firearms offenses.

Am I so far outside of the loop that I didn't know you had to register ammo in certain areas? Crazy.

I have no idea but the possibility has some crazy ideas running through my head ...

* Do you have to turn in your used brass to ammunition inspectors to prove you fired the rounds? Do you have to show the same number of bullet holes on a paper target as the brass you turn in to account for where you fired each round? Must you recover the lead from the berm? From inside the game animal (oh wait, no way the allow HUNTING in that area - so that's a mute point).
* Is it even legal to reload spent brass and if so do the reloads have to be registered with the DC gubmint? Or is reloading ammo the equivalent of making moonshine inside the Beltway? Is owning reloading equipment a crime on the level of owning a still or a bong?
* How is black powder "ammo" registered?
* How do you fit a registration mark on a .177-caliber BB, or are air rifles not covered by the registration requirements? What about potato cannons? Pea shooters? Do students have to inform the government if they ball up a piece of cafeteria napkin with the intent to spit it through a milk straw? What about rubber bands fired from wooden clothespin "guns"? What about rubber bands flung off fingers? If I skip a rock on the Potamac River, do I have to first purchase that rock from a gubmint store to ensure it is properly registered?

I think they mean an "unregistered firearms violation" and then "(having) ammo violation". First violation is unregistered firearm. Second violation is having ammo at all without a corresponding registered firearm.... NOT failing to register the ammo.

That would make his RV a compound...

Did they find a bunker and tunnel system? (yes, I'm being silly)

But those are normally in these type of reports.

Until we get a few things straight, the only way anyone should carry firearms to DC is with about 10,000 others who are all armed. Then the DC PD and the Parks people would just hide until everyone left.

Guess he won't be flying anywhere soon.

About the Arizona man. The federal government is scared of people who take care of themselves. :cheers2:
