Now Which Way Did That Go? LCP

Post by cowboymd »

Last Monday I decide to get that last mowing in. Normally would have cargo shorts on but with it being a little cooler I had on my Levi’s. Put the LCP w/ pocket holster in my rear pocket and got the lawn tractor out and got after it.

A couple of hours later, went in and put the holster and LCP on the dresser and took a shower. Got out and went to put up the LCP and found “no magazine.” Must of hit the release in my pocket and lost it mowing. Now I did remember hitting (a rock?) in a strange place while mowing, but really didn’t think too much about it. I went out and walked the near acre in low light and found nothing.

Next day had a early morning appointment, and by the time I got home it was pouring down rain till after dark. Worked daylight to dark Wed-Sat so it was Sunday after church before I could get out to look again. I walked all of it twice and part of it 3 times in different light conditions. Nothing! Now mind you this isn’t a manicured lawn, more like a cow pasture with a house on it. Spent more time looking today. Still no sign of it.

The question is what happens if I don’t find it till next Spring with the mower? What’s the opinions on a mower blade firing a bullet?

You've just discovered one of the reasons why the Europeans like their mag releases on the heel of the grip.

The chances of a mower blade penetrating the magazine wall and hitting the primer just right without rupturing the cartridge (which would allow burning powder gases to escape in a direction where they would not accelerate the bullet)are pretty close to zero.

Even if it managed to do that, since the cartridge would not be contained in a gun chamber that would allow the pressure to build up, the projectile would pop out of the case at low velocity as soon as the pressure in the case exceeded the friction of the case mouth's grip on the bullet. There's nothing to worry about there.

I'd be more upset about having to replace the magazine.

Fortunately I have other spares, and it isn't my daily carry. I kind of felt there wouldn't be any velocity if one did manage to fire, but the neighbors sure might think that was a awfully loud backfire?

Boy, that's a new one.

Good thing I don't have grass, ... or an LCP

try to rent a "rolling nail magnet" and drag it behind your riding mower. Roofers and building contractors use them to pick up nails after stripping a roof, and other contruction processes. if your ground is firm enough and the mower tires don't drive the magazine too deep, the magnetic roller will pick it up.

Just a thought. I've dropped screws, nuts, bolts, etc around the yard while making emergency repairs on various things and keep a heavy magnet (an old "woofer speaker magnet") taped to a stick to drag through the grass. Works like a charm.

Hopefully, your yard isn't like my neighbor's yard. Last year, before they got foreclosed on, they rented a mower so they could search for where they left their mower from 6 months earlier

This is why I never pocket carry my P3AT — which is just a low-rent LCP — anymore. It almost never fails that when I take it out of my pocket to put it away, I find that the magazine has been partially ejected, by the release button being inadvertently pushed at some point during the day. I love me some pocket revolver in .357. Pockets just as easily, waaaaaaaay more power, and no spontaneous magazine ejections.

That's pretty annoying...I was thinking about one of these mouseguns. Do any of them have a better mag-release to prevent this kind of thing? My main carry will be a P7 PSP with the euro style release recessed, so it shouldn't be a problem there.

You can rent a metal detector for half a day from Sunbelt Rental for $23. It should be pretty easy to find with one of those. There is one in Frisco and one in Plano.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

If you rent the psychic, at least get him to find you a new spot to drill a well while he is at it. You wanna get your money's worth!

Good idea! I'll check with guys at work, one of them will probably have a metal detector. :tiphat:

I think the velocity you'd have to worry about would be from the mower blade propelling the magazine like a rock

I carried a P3AT for a year or so, and an LCP for the last year or more.
I think I recall one instance where I found the magazine released on the LCP.

Did you look on the mower for the mag? I did that once on a 4 wheeler and the mag was on the foot rest.

Yes, I've already checked under the seat and on top of the deck, looked there after I couldn't find it on the ground.
