Springfield XDsc can it shoot +P+ 127 gr Win Rgr T series

Post by HarleyDave »

:txflag: :patriot: to all. Quick question, is it plausible to use this hot ammo, as in title, for the 3" Springfield XDsc as PD ammo or should I use a lighter load? This is for the wife's pistol?

thanks
PS, this ammo should work in a Glock 19 as well or ?

Sure it is plausible but is it good for the gun? Call Springfield and ask. I personally see no reason to run +P+ or even +P in 9mm as long as you have quality ammo in standard pressures. I would just buy a 357 sig or .357 mag if I wanted to safely move that caliber bullet faster. I own a S&W 908s and even though it is rated for +P I see no reason it is needed. 9mm is for personal protection against humans, nothing more. If I want more power I will just pick up my .40 S&W, 10mm or .45acp.

Same goes for .40 S&W +P, sounds like an accident waiting to happen. That’s what the 10mm is for. This seems to be a common theme with 9mm, everybody wants to push it harder. Remember the 9mm is not meant to be a .357 mag or sig for that matter. It will still put down more power then a .38 special +P in the same bullet weight. It is really not an underpowered round. Its just not in the same league as the bigger bores. Plus your wife might not shoot the gun very well with even +P.

I am sure +P is not a problem but call Springfield about the +P+.

XDs can handle a pretty steady diet of +P ammo, but it is not necessary. You gain very little in ballistic performance over a standard defense load. What you do gain is increased recoil resulting in slower follow up shots. Your "velocity is king guys" will flame me for this but if you look closely at a ballistic comparison between two similar grained bullets one +p and one standard, I think you will agree. I know your wife will once she touches off some +P out of a sub-compact. If you feel like you must run higher pressure, look at the Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo. It is designed for compact weapons and is more pleasant to shoot than most +p loads. My .02

Great and thanks for the input. Actually ordered it by mistake from Ammo to go along with my 45 ammo. so that is why I was asking. :cryin

Actually, based on a previous thread, if what you bought was RA9TA, it's a +P load, not +P+. I'm not aware of any Ranger T-Series loaded to +P+.

Other general comments: To my knowledge, there's no such thing in the SAAMI specifications as a .40 S&W +P. The only manufacturer I'm aware of who sells what they refer to as a .40 S&W +P is Buffalo Bore...and I believe that's just something they chose to call it for marketing purposes.

As for the .45 ACP, I do like +P for defensive loads. By nature, the .45 ACP--especially in a 230-grain bullet--is a big, slow round with low SAAMI pressures. The difference in standard and +P loads there means up to a 15% difference in muzzle velocity, and the extra pressures are negligible for modern pistols. But even at +P pressures, a 230-grain .45 ACP is coming out of the muzzle at less than 1,000 fps, with a typical 9mm 147-grain at about 1,200 fps, and a .40S&W 165-grain at about the same. So I personally see some value in +P for the .45 ACP, but agree that it's generally unnecessary for the 9mm or the .40 S&W.

Skiprr. so you think it is not actually a +p+. That was my earlier thread you were mentioning. I took the reference number right off of the box. :???:

The .40 I was referring to was the Buffalo Bore. Didn't know it was just +P in name. I figured it was to CIP specs or just a little higher pressure. Just checked BB website and it sounds more like a disclaimer then anything. Saying that they are not responsible for its use and it specifically addresses the Glock and talks about converting to a fully supported barrel. http://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l= ... tail&p=115 My guess is they run it on the ragged edge and want to try and not be liable. Also, like skiprr said I don't think Winchester makes a +P+ in 9mm unless it is some kind of LE ammo only that I am not aware of.

On Winchester's Website http://www.winchester.com/Products/le/h ... RA9TA.aspx it just says P. I think ammo to go labled it wrong online. Velocity is at 1250 so that doesn't seem like +P+. Most run at least 1300. If it is +P you should be fine.

Thanks CC Italian, so you think it is fine for the Springfield 9 XDsc and probably our Glock 19's?

I wouldn't see why not IF it is only +P. My brother shoots +P out of his Glock 17 with no problems and I know some guys run +P through there XDs. That being said you know the usually routine. This is just my experience in what I have seen. Like I said call Springfield and Glock or just shoot them an Email. Almost all new quality firearms are rated for +P because so many people use it in the 9mm.

P.S Does it say anything in the owner’s manual about +P in a XD. It did in my S&W owner’s manual. I just checked the manual it is on Springfield’s website it doesn't say anything about using +P. It does say not to use reloads and frangible rounds. Check out the manual and shoot them an email.

The Winchester Ranger 127 gr was always billed as +p+ in the past and the specs haven't changed maybe they have a new powder that will develop the velocity without going over +P. It is safe to shoot in any modern pistol although a steady diet of it will lead to accelerated wear. This is an awesome load that comes close to 357 SIG performance.

Once again I stand corrected. Even though Winchesters website says Just P it seems it is +P+ as Mojo said. Is this what you have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYSkDt7xQSw If so it says +P+ right on the box. I would assume its ok to use but like Mojo said it will accelerate the stress on your gun.

CC Italian, thanks for all the info and don't worry my wife corrects me all of the time "rlol" and to MoJo.

MoJo, thanks for helping out. I checked in my Springfield XDsc manual but couldn't find anything on it so I guess I'll send them an email unless someone else has shot this ammo? I only wanted to use for for SD and shoot 25 rounds through to make sure it feeds well and not really use for other shooting, can't afford it...just sayin

anyway, thanks and appreciate it.
