Kimber Customer Service......

Post by cyphur »

...is apparently top notch! I sent them my Tactical II Ultra 1911 on Thursday of last week, Air through Fed-Ex. Called them today to ensure they had received it. Found out not only had they received it yesterday and inspected it, but that they will be replacing the slide completely with an updated Internal Extractor Slide, will be replacing my night sights with new ones(thought the old ones were pretty bright, so these new ones should be pretty nice), and will be going over the rest of the pistol with a fine tooth comb to make sure its up to spec. Then they're going to put about 100 rounds through it to make sure it functions, and should have it back in 2 to 3 weeks.

I'm not thrilled to be without my Kimber for 3 weeks, but I can't complain with the fruits it should bear. I will update everyone when I receive it back and have time to take it to the range.

And I have to thank The Marshall for the loaner pistol to keep me covered in the mean time. He is one heck of a guy! I really do appreciate it Bill!

That's great to hear. While I hope never to need to send mine back, it's good to know they are willing.

Thanks for relaying a good customer service experience. So often it's only the bad stuff we hear about.

My Kimber, a Classic Custom Target with Hogue grips, is about nine years old. After a few hundred rounds to break her in, she's been rock-solid and way more accurate than I'll ever be...so long as I keep her spotlessly clean. For Christmas, I think I'll order her a new recoil spring and barrel bushing. ;-)

I shot a friend's Wilson Super Grade a couple of months ago, and I gotta tell ya the slide action felt and sounded like closing the door on a top-of-the-line Mercedes compared to lesser automobiles.

But in my hands, my Kimber fires groups just as tight. Maybe on a bench-rest lock-down I'd see a difference.

I mentioned somewhere else that I hadn't decided on a carry package yet. Any full-size, non-polymer 1911 is just too much size and weight for my daily carry. But if accuracy, reliability, and stopping power were the only considerations, I'd want my trusty ol' Kimber in my hands. So given my experience with Ol' Fatithful, I'm leaning toward their carry models. Just don't know which one yet. ;-)

Please keep us informed about Kimber's follow-through.

Skiprr, if you're thinking about a 1911 carry piece, I will say, after having carried both 3" and 4" 1911 Kimbers, I favor the 3" by far. Many folks say they are less reliabile, but seeing as it goes bang every time for me, I have no reason to doubt it. If I were using it in a tactical situation I could see the need for going with a longer barrel and better longer distance accuracy. However, since this is purely for self defense, I am not worried at all.

For the price, you can't beat a Kimber.

Cyphur,

I sent my three year old Tactical Ultra II back to Kimber on Monday, the 28th of August by FedEx Priority Overnight because of a couple of problems.... Failure to feed the last round in the magazine, erratic extractions and dim night sights.

Received the pistol back today by UPS Next Day Air, less than 2 weeks turn around time, and that included the Labor Day Holiday in that time period !

They replaced the older external extractor slide with a brand new internal extractor slide, replaced the barrel, reamed the barrel chamber, polished the barrel chamber, polished the push rod, and replaced the front and rear night sights with new ones.

My cost ? Nothing except the shipping to Kimber.

I made it a point to tell Dennis that I bought the pistol used and did not know if it was still under any type of warranty. He said "no matter, just send it in."

Outstanding service !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine fires perfectly with anything and everything now. I have tried multiple brands of ammo and several different makes of magazines, no problems whatsoever. I am one happy camper.

Hope you have the same luck !

Which one did you send back to Kimber? Was it a reliability problem?

Just passedthe 500 round mark on my Tactical Ultra II and the only issue it had was failing to feed the last round in the Mag a couple of times. DaveT did they tell you what caused that? It seems to have stopped but I'd like to know in case it starts up again.

The 4" isn't mine, its a loaner.

I sent the 3" in because it was having issues with shorter OALs on Winchester White Box 230gr FMJ target rounds. It happened every time I took the gun out, but only 2-3 rounds per 100rd box. When you lined up six or seven rounds next to each other and mixed in the problem rounds, you could see they were shorter with your bare eyes.

I didn't send it back in because I was unhappy, if it were a range gun it wouldn't have been as much of an issue. However, its my carry piece and since I had heard good things about Kimber's CS, I figured I'd call and see what they thought. Well, they said to send it in, no questions asked(I too bought it used from an individual, but they didn't ask or care about it). Now they're going to replace half the gun and touch it up, all for $35 - the cost of air shipping.

I have heard of hundreds of folks firing thousands of rounds through their Kimber 1911s without issue, but the main problems seem to be coming from the External Extractor slide models(but not all EE equipped guns have issues). Guess I got unlucky.

Received a phone call this afternoon from Kimber, they are done with my Tactical Ultra II.

According to the gentleman on the phone, they practically replaced/touched up more than half of the gun.

- New Internal Extractor Slide
- New Recoil Spring(s?)
- Replaced night sights
- Polished the barrel/feed ramp
- Touched up a few other small things I cannot remember

They fired it with both the Kimber mag I sent back, and the Wilson Combat mag I furnished. They said they will be sending the same two back, as well as three take-down tools(as I mentioned I was messing mine).

I should be receiving it next Tuesday, hope to hit the range shortly after that(maybe Wednesday?). I will report back when I have more updates.

Very correct. He is a 1st class 2A gentleman. Man I wish I had enough Kimbers to loan one.

But LT, you still owe yourself a new Christmas present, don't you? ;-)

Thanks for the report, cyphur. It still sounds like a great overall experience. Please let us know if she's 100% to your satisfaction once you get her back.

As for me, I'm looking at the afternoon forecast of 72 degrees, low humidity, and clear, and thinkin' I may just have to take the afternoon off and go out to the range. Had planned to go tomorrow, but today may be too good to pass up.

Sorry for the tardiness of the report, but it was a busy week with family!

Got it back from Kimber on Monday, and quickly headed out to the range. Ended up shooing at TargetMaster's for the first time, nice range!

Had a few FTF's with WWB target ammo again, but it was still always on rounds with a shorter OAL. I'm starting to think its a QC problem with WWB. Put half a box of Winchester JHP through it and they fed 100%, no hangups whatsoever.

Gun looks almost brand new, night sights are bright as can be, and it shoots like a dream! Major props to Kimber.

Good to hear, I am going to call them tomorrow. Seems the magazine they supplied with my U2 Tactical is scaring up my feed ramp in the frame.

Thats due to the metal follower in the magazine. You can get a kit from Wilson Combat that replaces it with a plastic follower and Wilson spring that will fix that.
