The only downside to Taurus is their customer-service, judging from all the complaints I've seen. The RIA guys, on the other hand, are quite famous for going above and beyond.

I had a great experience with Taurus customer service when I sent one of mine for a repair...I won't lie and say I was concerned when I purchased it because of the comments. I also don't want to have to send it back again.

if you want a new 1911 for under 600 and want a lot of features, go with a Taurus. Personally I hate those guns but there is a lot there for the money. If you want a GOOD gun, get a springer GI, but those a base model guns. Personally, I would save a few hundred more dollars and get a quality gun the first time out. BTW, you do get what you pay for in the 1911 world. Mose money does equal better quality, features and performance.

I disagree with your assessment. I bought a SS loaded Springfield that was over $600 more than 10 years ago. Then because the factory didn't think there was anything wrong with it, I paid another $400 to get it to function reliably. I also bought one of the Mil-Specs that went back twice to get it working.

I paid over $900 for a Kimber Eclipse Pro II and can't recall any issues.

But I've bought five of the Taurus, four blue and one SS, and every one has been perfect. Only the SS was over $500.

I traded one of the blued ones for a .40 Hi-Power, but still have the other four.

The Taurus are my favorites by far.

You can get an Armscor (Filipino) 1911 for around $500 at the gun store just North of the intersection of Jones Rd. & 1960 ... it's located on the East side of Jones Rd..

Armscor produces under several brand names: Rock Island, High Standard and Iver Johnson. I purchased a High Standard CS (this is Officer's Model size) there. With Chip McCormick magazines without the base pad, it's very concealable. Being a lefty, I took it to Herman Mueschke in the Heights to have him install an ambidextrous safety on it ($35).

At 400 rounds, the only problems I've had with it have been with seating of my own LRN loads that were seated at OAL of 1.270. Once I crammed them down to an OAL of 1.250 they seated just fine. The weapon has had no problems of any kind with factory loads of JHP's or FMJ's.

Remington just jumped into the 1911 game this year and their product looks to be pretty nice for the price. But I agree with everyone else and think the RIA 1911 is a fine weapon. I am not impressed with any of the GI models b/c they leave so much to be desired from a modern pistol in terms of features. Not to say they are bad guns, I just like good sights and a beavertail grip safety.

That my friend is a "steal" for $389,and should prove to be a great choice. heck, if I didn't already have a Springfield and a Colt 1911, I'd get that sucker. Congrats.

The only thing I don't care for is the GI sights. Old eyes, you know. I'm gonna fix that soon.

For what it's worth, I own two RIAs... A GI model and that compact. I also own a Kimber Ultra CDP II (3" barrel). The only things the RIA give up to the Kimber are the sights, a bit of weight, & appearance.

I paid more for the Kimber than both RIAs together. I think you made a wise choice!

AndyC put a few rounds through my compact RIA while it was still in it's break-in period. Hopefully, he will come back and give you his impression of the pistol.

I have seen the RIA Commander selling for $385 at the last several shows and the Govt for $365 (both new). AJC and Bachman both sell for that price. You would be crazy to pay over $400 for it anywhere else unles you just can't wait.

STI has a very nice 1911 for $698, the Trojan. It has fiber optic front sight, adjustable rear, and a full length guide rod. Quite a lot of bang for the money.

And they (this one included) feel very nice in the hand and operate so smoothly. Would love to fire one!
