I've been riding the TRE since it started Fort Worth to Dallas service September of 2000. You are right about the regulars that know each other the group I ride with get together with our spouses for dinners, play golf etc. I don't know about the light rail, green line may be light on LEO presence due to the fact it's new. I know most of the LEO's that work part time security on the TRE line to augment Dart PD and Fare Enforcement.

I feel perfectly safe as long as I have my traveling companion for the day under my shirt. Yeah I've had a couple of obnoxious drunks, and when pointed out to the conductor seen them get the boot at the next station. Know of one incident where a guy threatened to kill the wrong passenger, when he laid hands on him all bets were off, after he was at the business end of Mssrs Smith & Wesson PD hauled him to jail, conductor even held the train for him while PD took the statement. Emergency squawk bow alerted train crew of the problem they called PD,passenger kept him face down in the floor.

I have all agencies I travel through non-emergency numbers to dispatch in my phone. Guess I'll check out the light rail up to Farmers Branch since that station is only a few blocks from my office and I can bypass i35. I generally feel as safe on the train as in the car even on the late or very early ones.

I ride the Houston Metro train quite often. The only time I see transit officers is when they're checking "Q-Cards".

A co-worker told me he witnessed a murder. One dude beat the other to death and no one stepped in. My response of course was, "Including you, right?"

I still ride the train but I'm always armed.

One of the reasons (in going thru the pros and cons) for me to make the decision to go for a CHL and a weapon is because I occasionally ride DART and also sometimes I have to park in dark areas when I work. It's unnerving to say the least. I decided I didn't want to become a dead statistic.

I, too, prefer being a live statistic.
