Basic AR15 training?

Are there any instructors or classes in Houston that provide ar15 training? I am not looking for the advance tactical level training, but training for someone who is new to ar15, like proper handling, shooting techniques, sighting in the rifle etc.

Go talk to a recruiter, closest option for BCT is the Air Force in San Antonio.

Next closest is Fort Sill("Fort Kill") in Lawton, OK for the Army. This would be my choice seeing as how the Army trained me and made me very proficient on the M-16/AR-15 platform.

+1 for the Hoffner course for someone local. Clint Smith's Thunder Ranch DVD "Urban Rifle" is a great starting point. He has a very no nonsense teaching style which is unlike the magpul DVD's where they do everything except commando rolls (that might be in the next episode). That's not to say that you won't get anything out of the Magpul stuff its just more fluff.

If you want something on the next level from there try Paul Howe's weekend civilian Tactical Rifle Operator course at CSAT. He also does a week long instructor course where the final exam is to teach the weekend class. They have all kinds of people in those classes from the full on tacticool armchair commandos, military/LEO's, and people with jeans and t-shirts who stuff mags in their back pockets.

Paul is the real deal and he doesn't do any rolling around on the ground or shooting under cars/barriers. His style is 3 shooting positions with an emphasis on accuracy over speed. Good luck with whatever you decide to do...but do something to educate yourself.

I took yesterday off and met up with Steve Vandermolen for my AR training. In case you don't know Steve, he is known as SRVA on the forum.

As mentioned, I am new to AR so I basically brought a unfired, un-lube rifle to the range. Steve starts by walking me through the various parts of the AR and their functions. He then showed me how to disassemble/assemble the rifle. He make sure the rifle is completely lubricated and walk me through sighting the rifle. He showed me the proper stance. proper way to hold and aim the rifle and cover the fundamental until I was comfortable shooting the rifle. We spent majority of our training shooting, we did different drills, shooting at multiple targets. rapid firing, moving while shooting.

Through out the whole session, Steve covers everything I wanted to know and offered a lot more tips and knowledge. He was very patient with me and he made the whole training fun. He is a great instructor and you can tell he enjoyed teaching this stuff and I had a blast. I am definitely looking forward to my next training with him!

Our tac guys go through Paul's swat operator course. I think maybe the cars thing is an LE/Mil deal because from what I hear from, they did some.

Finding shooing positions around a vehicle is very relevant training for some. He has a great sight for the AR platform.

I think that anyone who carries a pistol on a daily basis (LEO, CHL etc), would benefit from learning where to shoot and how to move around vehicles.

When I took the rifle course we ran out of time and didn't get to do anything on the vehicle range. In the pistol class we did do the vehicle course where we moved from car to car around other people with our pistols in the sul position while shooting steel. Paul said that if anyone is laying on the ground shooting under a vehicle (like the Magpul guys in their video), just skip a few underneath and they'll catch one or two rounds eventually

I did actually install his XS sight on my SBR and it does work well (eric had a hell of time installing it on my GG&G BUIS). It got me to be able to shoot faster close up, using the notch, where I didn't have to adjust point of aim on surgical shots within about 7 yds.

Come shoot IDPA with us at Thunder Tactical Shooters. We have an old minivan we use to shoot around from through, under... We generally roll it out once a month.
