Range Report: Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail

Post by dws1117 »

Diode and I went to Carter's Country to take the new gun out for it's first walk. This thing didn't walk. It ran, and ran nice.

It was fed Winchester Ranger 230gr JHP, Cor Bon 165gr +P, Hornady TAP 230gr, and my handloads Rainier 230gr RN over 5.6gr Win 231 with CCI 300 primers. It digested everything except the Hornady. For whatever reason this gun didn't like them. They wouldn't even chamber. The slide would be out of battery about 1/4" and would be jammed. It took considerable force to get the round out. As mentioned earlier all other ammo fed and shot without a hitch.

Accuracy was excellent. My best group placed 5 shots within 2" with 2 fliers. All shooting was at 7 yards. I blame the two fliers on the blow from Diode's .357 mag Smith and Wesson going off next to me. Have to blame something because it can't be the shooter.

The front strap checkering is really nice. I was worried that it might be too aggressive and have a cheese grater effect, but it was just right.

Sights were nice and for the most part the rounds went where the sights were placed. After about 150 rounds I noticed that the rear sight was about to fall off the left side of the gun. The set screw had shot loose. A little loctite and it's be as good as new.

The trigger was really nice. I may still take it in for a massaging, but it isn't a bad trigger at all.

It was very comfortable to shoot with the bobtail mainspring housing. It fits so naturally in the hand. It really can't be described, but must be felt to truly appreciate. The supplied MSH is smooth. I may replace it for the available checkered housing at some point.

Other than the loose sight and the issue with Hornady ammo I am very pleased. It is a very good gun and highly recommend it to anyone looking into a commander sized gun with most of the bells and whistles but either can't or won't spend spend the money on higher end guns.

Okay, so where are the pics?
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

6:00AM??? Put down the crack pipe and walk away. Way too early for me.

Yeah yeah the sight almost came off. A little lock tite and it's good to go. But, it shot very well.
