Kel-Tec Sub - 2000 Questions
Considering a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 to replace my USGI M1A1 Carbine for HD and range fun. It's cheap, and I've read good reviews, but I want to be able to mount a laser. Kel-Tec has an under attachment Picatinny rail, but on their web site feedback, some say it doesn't fit. Does anyone on the forum have that mount? If so, any feedback appreciated. Also, how do you determine which model takes the 15 rd Glock magazine. Their web site is very vague on this, and I understand the handgrip must be shorter than the one that takes the 17 rd mag. I ask because I have lots of G19 mags, but in the end will primarily use the 33 rd magazine. TIA

Take a look here, and I bet all your questions will be answered. The only problem is, now you will have more questions. LOL

Thanks, that forum answered the rail question, but I'm still in the dark as to how to identify the model that accepts the G19, G17, G18 mags, from the one that only accepts the G17, G18 mags. Is there a model number difference? All I got from the FAQs was,eureka40 wrote:Take a look here, and I bet all your questions will be answered. The only problem is, now you will have more questions. "In 9mm. The Glock 19 has a slightly shorter grip than the Glock 17. Glock 19 model Subs will take Glock 19, 17 and 18 mags (15, 17 and 31 rounds respectively unless otherwise modified - note that most 18 mags usually come with the +2 extensions - see below). Glock 17 model Subs will only take Glock 17 and 18 mags. The high capacity 9mm Glock mags (Glock 18) work very well as they come from the bag."

I would just call KelTec and ask them. They are known for great customer service.

I think the box should say GLK17 or GLK19 in the model number to indicate grip length. (e.g. SUB2K9GLK19)
If it's used and there's no box, I guess you could insert a G19 magazine and see if it latches.

Now that I see Hi Point has come out with their carbine in .45 cal, I will have to give that a look too. Excellent reviews on their 9mm and .40 carbines, plus you can get the factory laser and lights, or red dot. My local LGS (SMR Firearms) sells Hi Points by the boatload too. Lifetime warranty ain't bad either. Only issue I see is that it only uses a 9 rd magazine, and no aftermarket mags in higher capacity are available. But hey, 9 rds of .45 SDammo ain't too bad for HD.
Re: Kel-Tec Sub - 2000 Questions
I have shot both the Kel-Tec and the Hi-Point and prefer the Hi-point. I cannot get my head low enough to use the iron sights on the Kel-Tec, the stock is in the way. Both the older version of the Hi=point and the newer version are fun and accurate.

Re: Kel-Tec Sub - 2000 Questions
I LOVE my Sub 2K. I consider it to be the best $320 I have spent on a gun. It eats everything I have fed it (Tula, WWB, Remington JHP, Hydra-Shoks) and is accurate as all get-out. I keep it and a couple of spare mags in a laptop case in my truck with me all the time. Here are a couple of tips:
1. Get the butt extender from Kel-Tec. It is cheap, makes the gun a lot more comfortable to shoulder, and doesn't increase folded length. I also like that it protects the front sight when folded.
2. Get the buffer tube cover from Tacti-Cool. Dirt cheap, and is much nicer than putting your face on a metal tube on a chilly morning.
3. The accessory rail fits perfectly. In fact, I just ordered a laser/light combo from Midway to try out on mine.
4. Get the G17 model, even if you can find the G19 model. Because of the way the weapon works, even the G17 model has a pretty short grip. I have fairly small hands, and I find the G17 model to be just right. I thiink the G19 model would be too short. However, if you still want G19 mags to fit, you can carefully shorten the grip with a dremel to take G19 mags, or you can have a pro like Dale at http://www.gripreductions.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; do it for you.
5. While you have the Dremel out, take off about half of the mag release. It sticks out ridiculously far. I am a lefty, and I dropped a mag twice at the range because my trigger finger hit it. 2 minutes with the Dremel, and no more problem.
6. Consider a Hogue Handall. I just put one on mine, and I love it. It makes the grip fill out nicely.
7. The trigger is pretty atrocious at first, but it will lighten up and smooth out quite a bit after a couple hundred rounds. Its never gonna be great, however.
Other than that, my biggest advice would be to enjoy it for what it is: a compact, pretty accurate, folding carbine that is effective out to about 100 yards. You will see some of the mall ninjas on KTOG putting scopes, bipods, bayonets and other junk on the Sub 2K which, IMHO, is completely ignorant and misses the point of the weapon entirely. If you don't get carried away with it, it is an extremely economical and effective firearm.
