I couldn't help myself

Post by Katygunnut »

Yesterday, I met a guy at an Academy location to buy a Kahr PM9.

He was running late, so to kill time I decided to poke around the store a bit. They had several 1911's on display, including a Colt Defender. I had time to kill, so I figured that I might as well take a look at this purty little gun. One thing led to another and I soon found myself walking out the door with the gun in hand.

I will post a picture after I figure out how to put the thing back together. I disassembled it fine, but putting it back together is proving to be a wee bit challenging. I guess I'm spoiled by my Glocks which are relatively simple in that regard.

And for those keeping score on the Academy thread, they left me at the cashier counter and it was just under 20 minutes for the whole process.

They also had a pretty cool 22 caliber machine pistol looking gun by HK. I must resist the urge to go buy that one, although it WOULD be a good fit for a certain friend of mine.

Does anyone know if there is a gun buyers anonymous group I can join?

I got one on Monday. Teddy Jacobson is going to tune the action for me as soon as I can make a trip down there. I like it better than the Kimber platform.

You have pics?

Congrats.

I'm even thinking of opening myself to a new caliber. If the store still has it tom, I'm probably going to be picking up a keltec sub2k and some of those evil 33 round magazines.

Since I own nothing in 9mm, guess I"ll need some ammo too! :cheers2:

Is this a rhetorical question?

I'd love to hear how the Defender works out. I've been eyeing one, but the sticker price is a no go right now. I hear a lot of people bad mouth the 3.5 inch guns, but not many people share any positive feedback.

The general consensus on m1911 forum is that 10 years ago you wanted to steer clear of anything shorter than commander length. Nowadays, the kinks have been worked out. Teddy Jacobson and I talked for about half an hour the other day by phone. He urged me to run nothing heavier than a 185gr bullet through it, and was adamant about using a fast burning powder. He said trying to use a 230 gr bullet and a normal powder would not give near desirable energy for a .45 out of a 3" barrel. The physics behind what he is saying is sound.

My 3.5 rock island has been running great. I had a magazine issue initially but once I fixed that zero problems. I do think they're (the shorter guns in general) more suceptible to limp wristing malfunctions

You know I could have sworn that I saw a 3.5" RIA for sale somewhere, but when I went to the RIA website, they only went to Commander sized. Nothing like a defender. I want a short barrel, but full sized grips for 7+1 capacity, plus I have huge hands.
