would you buy a used rental gun?
Hello,
I have been looking to rid myself of my G23 and get a G19 instead. I was at a gun range today and they had some rentals they were selling because they upgraded to Gen 4 glocks. They had a few G19's including a 19c that were in the $380 range. They did have wear on them but seemed to be in OK shape. I was considering them because they are a lot cheaper than a new one. Do you guys think I should shy away from a high rounds rental gun or go for it? I like the idea of a compensated glock. Thanks

I might consider purchasing a range rental Glock, but not at that price. It would have to be much closer to $300, given the prices I 've seen for LEO trade-ins. (Plus, Glock "special" pricing for new guns is around $400.)

Also why do you want the compensated model? Is this for carry? I've always been told that - especially at night - the flash from a compensated pistol can be positively blinding, not a good side effect in a life-or-death scenario.

Where can one find a LEO trade in? I think most here carry a .40

Also, if you have to shoot close up to your body, you may end up with a face full of hot gas and debris. Most of the people I know who have one use it for competition purposes.austinrealtor wrote:cbr600 wrote:I might consider purchasing a range rental Glock, but not at that price. If you join GSSF, you can purchase a Glock for $425 and it comes with 3 magazines.

I like the idea of less recoil. And yes this would be a carry. I carry my TCP daily during the week since I got it 100% reliable. I only carry the glock on the weekends and usually it only gets carried about once every two weeks.austinrealtor wrote:cbr600 wrote:I might consider purchasing a range rental Glock, but not at that price. You can find a better deal in my opinion. As to the question of would I buy a rental gun? For the right price the answer would be yes if I could inspect and shoot it (If I don't buy I pay for the rental, If I do buy they don't charge me the rental) first. A lot of my favorite firearms are .... used.

Try your local cop shop. I checked my records and the last Glock I purchased was a used G19 for $346.93 (after tax) with night sights.E150GT wrote:Where can one find a LEO trade in? I think most here carry a .40

Last time I was at GT Distributors in Austin (haven't tried the Dallas location yet) they had 17's and 19's for $280-$310 used, and up from there.

In San Antonio, try Dury's guns. He has had the past two or three contracts for SAPD and gets some of the smaller cities too. Or you could drive up to Austin and check GT Distributors. They almost always have a few trade-ins in stock. They have a couple S&W model 65 revolvers I am considering right now. They just looked a little rough for the price they were asking, IMO.E150GT wrote:Where can one find a LEO trade in? I think most here carry a .40

...my first and only Glock (22) was bought for $289 at my local indoor range...had been a range gun...put over 600 rds. through it with no issues...used is my favorite market and never bought a bad 'un yet...

Re: would you buy a used rental gun?
Would I buy a used rental gun? It would depend on the condition and the price, just like anything else. How many of us bought used vehicles? I did, and I don't know about y'all, but I put my life on the line with vehicle safety far more frequently than I have ever done with any of my guns. I drive me car pretty much every day. I don't shoot my guns every day. My car was formerly a leased vehicle. My son's gorgeous and utterly reliable G8 GT was a former National Rent a Car.
So if the bore is in good condition, and there are no cracks in the frame, and it is not too sloppy loose, I wouldn't mind buying it. Of course the price I would be willing to pay for it would have to be commensurate with the approximate round count.

I don't think a rental gun is more or less likely to have problems than any other used gun. A rental has the advantage of possibly being properly cared for, You can't say the same about LEO trades. Price is the driving factor in any used gun purchase minor dings, small parts, etc. are not a concern I can fix those; major things like missing sights, shot out barrel, cracked slide/frame wouldn't be always be a deal breaker but the price will have to be really, really, good.

Re: would you buy a used rental gun?
I'd purchase a used rental gun for the right price, but I'd want to inspect it thoroughly before purchase and swap out all the springs before carry. $380 is too much for a rental unless it was very lightly used--take a look at the "smiles" on the top of the barrel and wear on the slide rails to get an idea of how much use it has had. I think that $300 is probably a more realistic price for a rental gun; you may be able to talk them down to this.
As far as police surplus guns go, give Summit Gun Broker a call; they get used Glocks in frequently.

Re: would you buy a used rental gun?
I'd trust a used LEO gun more than a used range rental. The LEO guns tend to have been shot a lot less, and AFAIK most agencies have the guns checked by their armorer regularly.MoJo wrote:I don't think a rental gun is more or less likely to have problems than any other used gun.
