What kind of reporting is that? I had to read the comments under the article to see what the story was.

Mayor Bloomberg needs to investigate by buying straw purchase weapons from the ATF.
Then he can do a press release about the Federal Govt illegally selling weapons for drug cartels to use. .
He could do that if he wasn't wasting time disclosing to the world that people were selling things LEGALLY.

Re: BATF may have screwed up
I've heard about this.
From my understanding, BATFE allowed illegal purchases to happen for AK's and AR's while using live tracking on the weapons traveling across Mexican lines.
Along the way, they were approached by Border Patrol and those illegally bought weapons were used to kill a Border Patrol Agent.
BATFE has been trying to sweep it under the rug, but Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa ain't gonna let this slide.

Re: BATF may have screwed up
BATFE has nothing to do with NICS checks. In some states (such as Texas), NICS checks are performed by the FBI. Other states may use regional networks that (as I understand it) have access to the same database.

Here is a somewhat more coherent article by an actual news agency:

I think Sen. Grassley may be mistaken about who is responsible for what.
I'm sure that if these gangsters had not been able to get their brother-in-law or cousin to buy a weapon from an American FFL, they would have been reduced to using machetes and slingshots. Because there is no other way to obtain a weapon, right?
