Well, I read the notice on here that Cabela's in Buda was sponsoring an NRA recruiting booth with a pretty good deal ($25 for membership and get a $25 gift card) so we went to Cabela's. Being a life member, I wasn't planning on joining the NRA again, but thought I would look at what Cabela's happened to have in stock for my son. My 11 year old has been wanting a shotgun and I thought I would see what was available.
Took my daughter with, and she saw the NRA booth and got excited about joining. So I bought her a one year membership and found the deal was even better than I had read. Instead of a $25 gift card, it was a coupon for 10% off your total purchase. And since she was just 18, she got in as a junior member for $15 instead of $25. Almost too good a deal to pass up. She wore her hat home and posted about getting her membership on Facebook on the way home.
Salesmen were pretty helpful showing me the youth model shotguns in stock and there were more than I had thought there would be. So, today I went back with my son to show him. I was thinking I might use the coupon, but I might wait until his birthday in July. It would depend on what he liked and what fit. Salesmen were just as friendly and helpful today. Showed him three different pumps, all of which were still just a little too long a pull for him (and his other hand could barely reach the pump when it was forward). Then we started looking at other types, and they showed him the Taurus/Rossi Tri-fecta. .243, .22LR, and 20 gauge single shot, all in one box with just changing the barrels. He liked it, but the one they showed had a really thick pad on it, making it just a little too long without my modifying it at home.
Much to my surprise, the salesman suggested not buying the new guns right now, and went over and found us a used Rossi just like the Tri-fecta, but without the .243. The used one had a very thin pad on the buttplate and fit him very well. And the price was only a little over half the cost of the new one. Well, now we had a deal I could not pass up. I asked my son which of the ones he liked best, and he chose the used one too, liking the fit. So he went home with a used rifle/shotgun combo in .22lr and 20 gauge. I told him it was a very early birthday present and he said OK (see if he remembers that). He is overjoyed now too.
I see a trip to a trap range coming up in the near future.
