I thought this was an entirely level-headed article.. Especially given that it was posted on PBS.
Clearly the writer would prefer that their child was not so interested in playing with guns... but...
Was there something sinister that I missed?

Actually that reflects an awful lt of my own philosophy.

I would want to know if my kid's fascination with guns was based on the destructive aspect.

I did not allow "toy" guns in my home, except such extremes as rubber darts and nerf balls.

And we even used the TV as a target for the dart guns, staging competitions amongst family members. Eventually bth of my daughters shot with my wife and I on a gallery rifle league, and my son did well on his high school rifle team.

My sons are around guns. There's my shotgun, (soon my Bersa.380), my FIL's pistol in his drawer, my Dad's .22 rifle and pistol, and their BB guns.

My FIL, BIL, and I have all taken them out shooting with the .22 pistol, and the Browning .22 rifle. they went on their first dove hunt this past season. I explained to them (during the trip) the consequences of using a real gun. They saw me shoot the dove, it fall, and they held it to see it would not come back to life.

Take the mystery out of it, the less likely they are to mess with them. Also, out of sight, out of mind.
