Isn't it funny that CHL carriers are the only civilians allowed to carry a firearm, yet there are signs everywhere telling the rest that they can't, even though the law already says it. I just find that funny

Anyone can carry a long gun; and technically a non-CHL holder can carry a handgun openly or concealed while traveling, hunting etc. (I don't recommend trying it, though.)kauboy wrote:Isn't it funny that CHL carriers are the only civilians allowed to carry a firearm, yet there are signs everywhere telling the rest that they can't, even though the law already says it.
I still think most of these signs are in place because some lawyer thought it was a good idea.

Cops are allowed to carry too, under both state and federal law. And military personnel aren't allowed to carry if it isn't within the course of their duties, or without a CHL if they are off duty.kauboy wrote:Isn't it funny that CHL carriers are the only civilians allowed to carry a firearm, yet there are signs everywhere telling the rest that they can't, even though the law already says it. Sorry, but it bothers me when people refer to non-law enforcement as "civilians." I think to me it insinuates an "us vs. them" mentality among law enforcement. Law enforcement officers are civilians according to the DoD. I know calling us "civilians" is just shorthand or slang, but it still bothers me.

I agree with hirundo82. Dictionaries don't tell the full story. Merriam-Webster, especially, picks up slang and mistaken usages like momento.
All civilians (non-military) are subject to civil law, including the police. The police are not fighting a war, and "the rest of us" are not the enemy.
BTW, I've heard security guards use the term civilians. Security guards are not law enforcement personnel and shouldn't forget it.
(Wandering further afield. I had a buddy years ago who was a security guard and EMS technician. He had wired up his headlights to flash alternately like an undercover police car. One day he pulled over someone he knew as a prank and ended up being arrested for impersonating an officer.)

Alright, I'll rephrase it for the anally retentive:
"Isn't it funny that CHL carriers are the only people who, not being officers or members of the military, are allowed to carry a firearm, yet there are signs everywhere telling the rest that they can't, even though the law already says it. I just find that funny"
There. Happy now? Geez guys, life isn't meant to be taken so seriously. Just chill

You have to replace firearm with concealed hangun.kauboy wrote:"Isn't it funny that CHL carriers are the only people who, not being officers or members of the military, are allowed to carry a firearm, yet there are signs everywhere telling the rest that they can't, even though the law already says it. I agree that the signs are useless. They might as well have signs in banks saying that robbing them is a felony. I think everyone knows already.
