So a buddy of mine told me yesterday that he keeps 3 FMJ rounds in the bottom of his spare mag, behind all the hollowpoints. His logic: If after 13 rounds of hollowpoints the BG hasn't stopped, he must be behind something that maybe a FMJ will punch through...
As of yet, I have been keeping all hollowpoints in my magazines, but I'm curious as to your opinions as to this idea. Sounds reasonable, but then again, he sold the idea to me in a more salesman like pitch. I'm trying to pitch it objectively here so that I can get some other responses...
Thanks!!!

Multiple ammo types in mag
about 65 days to plastic...
Carry guns:
Springfield V-10 3.5" 1911(thanks again, Texasvet)
Glock 26
Springfield XD40 4"
Llama 1911 (hey, don't knock it. Never had a SINGLE reliability problem with it. Over 1000 rounds through it.)
(lots of long guns, and a few other pistols for other use)

I think if a BG is behind something that you can't hit him in 10 rounds you probably have time to run away.firefighter3217 wrote:So a buddy of mine told me yesterday that he keeps 3 FMJ rounds in the bottom of his spare mag, behind all the hollowpoints. P.S. I used to have a Llama too. It was a good gun, but I traded it for a Colt.

Re: Multiple ammo types in mag
I have a couple mags like that at the bottom of the pile for the bedside pistol. Not because of any ballistic concerns, but because I have more mags than I can fill with two boxes of Golden Sabers, and I want to make sure that every available mag has something in it so I don't accidentally grab an empty one.firefighter3217 wrote:So a buddy of mine told me yesterday that he keeps 3 FMJ rounds in the bottom of his spare mag, behind all the hollowpoints. ...I did when I carried my .45 on duty...very likely scenario...I don't now...
Re: Multiple ammo types in mag
There was an article I read a while back by a Fed type guy in NY about HP rounds expanding prior to entry when the perp was wearing heavy clothing ( thick winter jacket). Don't know if there is anything to it but I do know others who have started alternating rounds in their magazines and some that do two HPs and then one FMJ.
Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.

Re: Multiple ammo types in mag
Believe you me, I am dying to get my hands on a 70 series Colt... Just cant afford one. Sometimes I wonder if I should have bought a Diamondback 380 instead of my Glock, then I wouldn't have bought the second milt sparks, and that savings would have me a LOT closer to having a Colt. But, instead, I've got the stuff in my signature for now.WildBill wrote:<snip>

My goal before I'm 30 is to have a 1911 (as close to original as possible), A1 model, 70 series, 80 series, Commander, one that was IN WWII, and finally a tricked out one. And I want them all in .45ACP. Maybe one day I'll try for a 6" 1911 in 38 super set up for ISPC or something, but I dunno...
Anywho, thanks for the input all... Maybe I'll do the second spare mag with all FMJ... That way if there is an unexpected feed problem, the FMJ should remedy that in a pinch as well...

Re: Multiple ammo types in mag
My wife has HP and FMJ mixed in her .32 auto. We only do it because of the caliber.
I did in all my guns but figured if I am in a situation where I can empty a mag without chances of hitting a bystander I can get away while doing so. LEOs may need to stick around but I don't. I know how to put rounds where I am shooting while moving. The point of shooting like that is only to keep the BGs head down. I will let a LEO with a rifle shoot thru things. And, I don't a modern HPs is going to have a problem penetrating any kind of clothing. May not expand well but it will penetrate.

no need that I can see. Use bonded HP like Gold Dots and that is sufficent.
