Going to take a leap...
Most folks who know me, understand how politically active I am in my community...It is public knowledge for the most part...
I got a few calls this last weekend, and over this last week I made some moves and announced my intent to run for the vacant seat that was held by our Texas Senatorial District Chair (District 11)...
Those calls were from my peers seeing if I would throw my hat into the ring and see what happens...Never to back down from an opportunity and a challenge, I'm going for it...
In my opinion this is not a slouch, gimme type position...It is a significant promotion, and it is one that I believe I can fill given the years of developing my conservative credentials, my position on the issues, one of which if anyone believes that I am not a fervent supporter of your unalienable right to keep and bear arms...Well, I have some land in Louisiana I wanna sell ya...
I have one known opponent for this position, and he is certainly a good guy, a peer of mine in the district and a fellow Precinct Chair...But he has only been a Chairman for a little less than a year, as I've been running the show and participating in its elections and conventions since 1992...I have fostered some great working relationships with elected officials all up and down the political spectrum, and have been a delegate to most of the Senatorial (County) and State (Texas) conventions since then...
I also value the efficient and professional running of the polling location in my Precinct since that time as well...That is out main function, and now it'll be up to me to ensure I get everyone to strice to do the same, to about 50+ additional Precincts...In 4 counties in our area...
So if this is a step I can take to bigger and better positions, then so be it...I don't plan on going anywhere but in the direction of Austin for now...And there is one person on this forum who knows that if I do get that far, that any bill that is Pro-gun, that your search for a legislator to hand carry that bill, file it, and get it through the committee process and onto the floor for a vote, you won't need to look far...
Anyway, the district will be caucusing tomorrow evening after work, and we'll know if I get the approval of my peers for this position...Whatever direction it does go, whether I get the job or not...I will continue to be serving my community, my state and my country like I have been doing since I was 18 years old...
See y'all on the flip side...

Re: Going to take a leap...
Well we gave it a shot, and apparently after I got into the race they called in one of the old school precinct chairs, and they barely won by one vote...Had I had one of the supporters show up it would have tied the vote, and then they would have been in a real quandry...
But my one guy is a LT. in the Harris County Sheriff's Dept and had a thing to do that evening...
One of these days we're going to have to figure out what it is that scares the crap out of my parties leadership about me...I've been sitting at the "kiddy" table for 19, almost 20 years and it apparently is SOP that you have to be retired or have more political involvement than I have had during that time...
Oh well, its the parties loss...BTW, after a three person run off I pulled in the third persons supporters and still came on short, it went 21-22 for them...
Maybe I'll post the announcement email blast and the letter I put on the chairs on the main floor to see what y'all think...Somebody remind me, I'm tired and going to hit the pit here in a second...
Later...

Wow, I'm really sorry you didn't make it. I'm not in your district/county, but if I was I'd be going for you. Maybe next Texas primary or general election?

Re: Going to take a leap...
There is an old saying that Politics is the art of persuasion...
I view politics and elected service to be just that, service...To be a principled representative...
What we have here is a group of people who have been playing this game for a very long time...They are to be commended for the most part, yet the bottom line is I, and a few others like me believe some folks are doing this for ALL the wrong reasons, either for power, or status to springboard into other things that they will eventually assume are theirs exclusively, and no one else should ever question their motives or intent...Either politically, or personal...
Our group of established and well seasoned conservatives will get together soon to strategize an effort to break the mold, so to speak...
Our group doesn't believe the "old guard" is a bad "faction" in our party, it is just that some folks believe some of us can do the same job, yet breath some fresh air into the political party process, and do it for the right reasons and to be more inclusive and welcome to new people coming into political activism and involvement...
It's not about me, because I know the dangers and ramifications of not establishing your intentions clearly enough and often enough (and proving to other) that you are not into this for yourself...That is extremely hard to do in this day and age of public cynism of elected officials...
Obviously, we'll see how it goes...

Re: Going to take a leap...
Steve, it sounds like you're running for all the right reasons; and it sounds like you've given the local party establishment a good scare. I think that local politics often devolves to who is and who isn't a member of the local good 'ol boys and gals club. The club begins to think that they have earned the right to keep non-club members from gaining a seat at the table.
It's human nature. The only way to give that attitude the beat down it so richly deserves is to show up with a clearly overwhelming number of votes. I hope that you take this loss as merely a step along the road, and an object lesson in what you will have to do to win the next time; and then go give those "illegitimate children" heck.

Re: Going to take a leap...
You guys are right on the money...This was not my first dance, and if I had had two more votes, I really believe we would have broken the back of the "establishment" on this one...But then again, I have to say I am of the same mold, for lack of a better term...I am an established conservative, Republican by aquaintance...So some could say I am of the "old guard" in some aspects as well...
But I'm not in it for a popularity contest, some are, and that is not the correct focus in my opinion...
I went in with both barrels blazin', and made the impact I wanted to make...And I guess that is what scares them...
I told them if they believe our work is done after the last successful election cycle...hehehe, I got some land in Lousiana I wanna sell them...
And having leadership that is "feckless" and "uninspiring" will undo those gains faster than water off a ducks back...I see those folks settling in for a lackadaisial approach, and a few of us are not going to stand for it...I think we can still fire up the base from our positions anyway...It just might have been better to have some fire coming from the big table this time...
I'm not going anywhere!!!
