Army deploys 13,000 Individual Gunshot Detectors to Afghan

These would seem to be most useful to locate snipers, or when only
a few enemy are firing, not in a full blown shootout.

Problem is the sniper moto is 1 shot 1 kill. how this will help?

Many years ago the French had deployed a vehicle mounted system that detect an locate and the direct a camera mounted heavy machine gun to the direction of the incoming fire, the operator would have to confirm the target and fire a salvo.

Not new stuff, we have had varying systems like this since my deployment to Iraq in 2006, vehicle mounted are the most common, some slaved to a weapon ("Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) ") Some just with a locator device for ID.
There was a company hawking a individual device last deployment (09-10) I had a look but was not impressed, it was still too early in the development, I just could not endorse it at the time. I'm sure what is being deployed now is a 2nd, 3rd, or more later generation, It looks about the same as it did when I reviewed it then, hope they addressed the issues we brought up.

Looks good, if it will save lives of the good guys (and gals). Just hope someone has got something with more range and lethality than the poodle shooters when the time comes to return fire.

IIRC, some system like this was to be set up in an American city,
in order that the LEO's could know when there was gunfire in the area.
I'm not sure whether the system could pinpoint the shooter's location,
or if it was just a generalized warning system indicating "shots fired".

One of the issues I had with the system when i reviewed it was the marginal performance in built up areas. It could tell us we were being shot at, but from what directing was a bit iffy..... I really did not need another 2lb of equipment that takes yet another set of battery (meaning more then 2 lb as I have to have a spear set of battery's on my kit now) just to tell me I was being shot at.

Waste of the tax payers' dollar.

If DOD spent the money on ammo for training, instead of developing, purchasing, and maintaining "high tech" pieces of junk that assaulters do NOT need or want, the force would be a lot better off.

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere. -Thomas Jefferson

I prefer mobile artillery with radar systems that can detect locate and target source of mortors fire. That is deadly!
