out of state license
I have a current Concealed Handgun License from Oklahoma that expires in Feb. 2012. My question is: 1) What is required for me to get a Texas CHL? Do I have to take class and tests and do range time or just turn in the Okie license and pay fee to get Tx. license. 2) Do I need to get the Texas CHL before my Oklahoma one expires or can I wait since the states are reciprocal?
Thanks so much, I hope we like it in Texas.

Sorry, I don't know the answers to your Q's, but someone will chime in here directly.
What gun(s) do you own, and what will be your EDC (Every Day Carry)?
By the way, go to the "User Control Panel" and input your town to the "Location" field.
That way other members close to you will be able to know that you are nearby and hook
you up with gun stores, etc. of which you can take advantage.

Roger - your OK CHL will be good until it expires. If you want a Texas CHL, you will have to take the class, and send in the application. Having a license from a reciprocal state does not exempt you from that. You are eligible to get your Texas CHL at any time after you have established residency in Texas.
The class is 10 hours. There is both a written test and a shooting proficiency test, neither of which is very difficult.

Crossfire,
Is his OK permit still valid once he becomes a Texas resident? Would he need to switch to a non-resident permit? Does OK even offer a non-resident permit?

OK does not issue non-res permits... http://handgunlaw.us/states/oklahoma.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jmra wrote:Crossfire,

I believe that as soon as he turns in his OK DL, the OP will be required to notify OK that he has relocated and this will invalidate his OK CHL, since one requirement for OK CHL is OK residency.... Not certain about this, just my assumption.
My suggestion..??
1. Take the TX class... soon
2. Change your DL from OK to TX
3. Send in your TX application on same day as #2
4. You'll be without a CHL for 3-4 weeks.... not too bad...
5. You can still carry in your car under MPA
I would not carry on my OK license after switching to a TX DL..
For anyone considering a move to TX... Apply for a TX non-res license BEFORE you move here, if you can work out the logistics (for taking the class)... Then switch to a TX resident license after you swap your DL.

Re: out of state license
You guys are correct. I did not even think about Oklahoma not having a non-resident permit. Still the same process to get a Texas CHL. Just adds a bit of urgency to the situation.
Re: out of state license
I'm in the same situation due to an upcoming move in May. My present state, Indiana, also does not issue non-resident license and this was a big concern. I called the licensing division of the Indiana State Police and was told that since I already have an Indiana license, life time expiration, it would still be good and to just be sure and change my address as required by Indiana law.
As a result I would assume it would vary by state.

Re: out of state license
I am currently carrying on a PA non-resident license since my Ohio license isn't any good here.
I took the approach of getting the TX non-resident license, but am still waiting for the bureaucratic wheels to grind. At least I am licensed, so it doesn't really matter how long they take in Austin.

Maybe OK works the same way... the license would still be good with an address change to TX, until the license expired.

Worth a phone call...
