I like Federal Flite control reduced recoil 9 pellet 00 buck in my pump. It throws a good tight pattern that will keep all 9 pellets in a mansize target out to 10 yards or so. In my 1100 I use Remington or Winchester full power 00 buck in the 15 round value packs from Wally World. Another load that is interesting is the 12 pellet 00 load by Nobel Sport available from ATG in Brenham. All are 2 3/4" shells.

#4 buckshot is the smallest I'm comfortable using for self defense. Birdshot will make a nasty surface wound but doesn't penetrate enough to provide a reliable stop.

Since I'm an apartment dweller and thus concerned about overpenetration, the first two rounds in the tube of my HD 870 are #4 buck, with the rest 00 buck. I have more 00 as well as slugs in the sidesaddle.
