How do you carry your spare mags?

Post by Skaven »

IWB, OWB? Do you worry about concealing them? How many do you carry? I figure the standard would be 2 additional mags.

OWB one or two depending on what gun I'm carrying and what BUG I'm carrying. I keep them concealed but don't get all wrapped around the axle about it. :thumbs2:

Pocket. Or in a Owb for a mag and a set of cuffs. Probably should carry more in the latter method...but I'm lazy and the pocket is simple. I have a roommate that ankle carries a mag a cuffs. I kind of like that setup.

Depending on the carry gun, OWB 8oclock, zip up pouch, or even loose in weak side pocket (a really poor choice.)

If I'm wearing my jeans, all of them are "carpenters jeans" and have the little pockets on the right leg around knee high, and I will stick the spare in there. If I'm wearing cargo pants/shorts, it will go in the right cargo pocket. If I'm wearing pants without pockets on the legs, it will go in either the right front pocket or the right back pocket, depending on how much stuff I am carrying and how long I will be sitting. Being left handed, I always carry the handgun on the left side and the spare mags on the right side.

A lot of belt holsters for cell phones are the right size for a spare mag, and they can hide in plain sight.

Of course, walking around with more than one cell phone on your belt is the modern-day equivalent of wearing a pocket protector; it stereotypes you as an IT nerd. But you can choose to "embrace the geek"...

The great thing about being retired is nobody pays attention to the GOM (Grumpy Old Man) walking across the parking lot. :smilelol5: :thumbs2: :evil2:

I use similar method, and even used phone or camera pouches in the past. But now I use pouches from these guys that conceal all my spare mags and even revolver speed strips

I went to bass pro shop and got 2 knife sheaths that keep the magazine fully covered. I just didn't know if it would be way to obvious or not.

I do pocket too, it's just convenient, except when I sit down for long periods of time :cryin

Ankle carry (no cuffs for me, thank you) seems interesting, and I've considered IWB, but I find that pocket carry is the most flexible. My belly band, when I carry that way, has room for two extra mags, so that works nicely too.

Good to see they are still around. I worked for them when they were still a mom and pop shop (literally) under the original owners. I drop one in the weakside pocket, and another fits in a Basspro large folding knife sheath worn horizontal at 11 o clock.

Right-handed, and my usual carry is either a standard or compact 1911 variant. With the single-stack, I carry two mags IWB at about 8:30 in a TT Gunleather mag pouch. Other sometimes-carry is an XDm; with the double-stack, I carry two mags OWB.

My pocket BUG is a Seecamp, and if I’m carrying that along with a primary gun, I seldom carry a spare mag for it. If that’s the only gun I’m carrying due to dress requirements or other circumstances, I drop one spare mag into a slot in what used to be a small, leather money clip; it goes in the opposite pocket (the Seecamp is in the right-front pocket if it’s alone; in the left front pocket if a bigger cousin is being carried IWB on the right side; have both left- and right-hand pocket holsters).

I don’t remember where I got the money clip thingy (retired it long ago for a different wallet method), but it’s very thin, made of soft leather, about 2 3/4" x 3 3/4", has two credit card slots on one side, an open pocket running vertically in the center, and used to have a leather-covered metal clip for currency on the other side. I removed the metal clip; without it, the “wallet” is less than 1/8 of an inch thick. I drop the BUG’s spare mag into that vertical, center pocket. Works for any of my small single-stack mags, e.g., a PM9 or P3AT. Keeps the mag from picking up too much pocket lint, breaks up the outline of the mag a little and, more importantly, keeps the mag oriented pretty much vertically in the pocket: I can reach in and grab it by the baseplate every time.
