Range report S&W Mod 66

Post by longtooth »

Range report on the 66 I bought from Diode.
This is the first quality revolver I have had in about 10 yrs. When I decided to get my CHL I could count the rounds I had sent through a self loader on both hands. Knew I was going to need to do some learning & convert to a SA for ease of conceal. Sold my revolver to fund my 1st carry weapon. Now I have one I really like again. Thanks Diode.

Double action trigger really took some getting used to. It is good. Stages good. I needed to relearn control. Yesterday was the 3rd time I have shot it now. Comfortable with it & it feels good w/ the Pacmyre grips. Single action is really good for out of the box. We did not talk about that. SA is really, Really, REALLY good for out of the box. Has it been worked on?

I have not bought any ammo for it.
All holes are from my reloads. 158 gr semi-wadcutters, I do not remember the charge.
I had about 25 factory .357 Mag rounds & shot 6 at the last target. They are Remington 158 gr SWC.

The black dirtybird spot is 6 shots at 3yds, 2 hands, standing, double action, point of aim hold. No excuse for the one. Gun shoots better than I do, especially w/ as long as the separation has been.
Red spot is 7yds, 2 hands, standing, double action, point of aim hold. The 3 at 9,10, & 12 oclock show that I need a lot of trigger time w/ my new friend. Since all my keepers have names I must come up w/ another now.

2nd target is 6 rds at 15yds, 2 hands, standing, double action, point of aim hold. This pattern is shooter & not the gun. I did this good on the next one at 25yds. Need trigger time. Any excuse works when you want to shoot more.

3rd target is 6 rds at 25yds, 2 hands, standing, double action, point of aim hold. Better than the 15yd set. Probably because I was  & got back to business.

4th target. This one was interesting. As I got ready to leave I thought, I wonder about 50yds. Had no idea about me or the gun. Took 6 shots at 50 yds, single action, 2 hands, carpet cushion rest off back of truck, point of aim hold at center mass.
I was very pleased with this. About 7 inches low at 50 yds. Windage spread is 8 inches. 5 are easy to see, the 6th is left on the inner ring at the slot.

Last target. As good as it shot at 50 yds w/ the 38sp reloads I ran 6 .357 mags through it to see. These are the Rem. 158 gr SWC. The large center powder burn, blast hole was from a contact distance drill I did. 6 shots, 50 yds, single action, 2 hands, carpet cushion rest off back of truck, same point of aim hold. 4 are evident, I am going to claim the other 2 are in the blast hole & stand on my reputation.  Any challenges to that & I wont argue until next time out w/ a clean board. ;-)
Very satisfied w/ the accuracy of the gun w/ only 2 choices of ammo.

The Gun: One of these days I will learn to take pictures. Some are good others are blurred. It is fun though.
I have a holster ordered from Simply Rugged in Alaska. Thanks goes to JLaw for the web address. When it comes in I will give a report on it too. I will carry the Smith in cooler weather when I can cover w/ my 5.11 vest. It will also be my field carry when hunting. May hunt w/ it too.
As I carry it some I will see how light a cover I can get by with. We have all had some good fun over the 1911 vs ggggllo you know. I really am an old wheel gunner & this gun will be carried. Wish it was a 9 holer  & would reload faster. I love it.
