WTB Pocket Carry (TCP/LCP ... maybe)

+1 for considering a j frame revolver. I carried a LCP for a while but had a nagging concern that a .380 was just not powerful enough to quickly bring a threat to a stop.

I eventually opted for the more substantial .38special+p and have never looked back.

Revolvers are hard to beat for reliability and still have a place in personal protection.

I can understand wanting to go to a .45 from a .380... but the newer .380's (computer designed. Old ones often didn't expand on impact) are said to be equivalent in penetration and inertial force as a .38 special plus. I haven't any reports to point to, other than Tom gresham on GUNTALK radio last year apologizing for going off of old ballistics studies. For years he said a .380 was not an adequate self defense round. He said he had just come back from a week at GUNSITE where they demonstrated to him the efficacy of the .380. Not being critical of anyones choice of carry, just suggesting there may not be as much difference anymore in .380/38/9mm as there used to be. I would think the main difference might be distance, as .380 has a shorter range.

Something like a compact 9mm/.45 that is single stack easily goes into cargo pants or front pocket of pleated slacks. Here is my Para Carry 9 as such (WHICH btw is for sale...cough cough).

Teamless, I had some of the same ideas myself. I ended up getting the Ruger LCR357. I have that same holster that TAM has and I can carry it in my pocket easy anytime. Its about the same weight as the LCP but packs quite a bit more punch. And at the same time, the reliability of a revolver is just dirt simple. No slide mechanism to get in the way, no jams, no worries. I carry it in my strong side pocket and a couple speed loaders in the right. The only time I have a problem with it is when the pockets on the shorts are simply too short for some reason. I have one pair like that and I think I just put them away and stopped wearing them. I still tend to carry my Kahr IWB most of the time, but when I need a pocket piece, its the LCR. However, I'm still thinking about an LCP or maybe even that S&W Bodyguard 380 just to have a BUG somewhere else.

Until i see it does not have a decocker.

So I am curious.
you load the mag, insert mag, rack the slide and now have a loaded chamber, with the hammer back.
How do you safely unload the weapon?

I ask, as the only way I have ever know how to bring a hammer forward, is either a decocker, or hold the hammer, gently pull the trigger and bring the hammer down slowly. While this may not be the right way and no, I have never done it, but have seen people do it this way.

I think for the price, I would probably fall back to the SW Bodyguard, but as this was a nice weapon, for just a few more $ dollars than the bodyguard, it is a thought...

Fire till empty.

Seriously though, you unload it just as you'd unload a 1911.
With gun pointed in a safe direction, finger off of the trigger, remove the mag and pull the slide back to eject the round. Then double check and triple check to make sure it's empty.

I had the same issue with my pocket carry, a hammerless Taurus .357. The best shorts I've had are Lee Dungaree Cargo shorts....the pockets are large and deep. Perfect for a revolver.

Whenever I am "shorts shopping", the first thing I do (before even trying them on) is stick my hand in the pocket to check for depth and room to accommodate a J frame.

When I load it and want to pocket it, do I have to drop the hammer (safely), or leave it ready and just engage the safety?

I would leave it loaded with one in the pipe, hammer back and safety on.

You should never lower the hammer with a round in the chamber IMO. It's an accident waiting to happen.

that was my concern as well. I wonder why they didn't put a decocker on it.
For pocket carry, the hammer back is just one more thing to get the weapon caught on I would think

the kahr pm9, j frame .38 and LCP are all highly concealeable wyatt (with you all the time) pocket guns. My experience is they work in any pocket. A baby glock can be carried in many but not all pockets.

My present daily carry is kahr pm9. I have also regularly carried a jframe.38 and on weekends carry a baby glock.
