Found out tonight I'm going to be a grandpa come November.

Now I'm on the trail of a little .22. I haven't even started the search but I'm looking for suggestions.

I've glanced at the cricket and chipmunk. What else is out there?

Looking for a .22 rifle for the the new grandchild. I figure it will get all the fluff at a the baby showers so I want to give some substance.

I recommend the Cricket. It's a single shot, nicely accurate, and easy to operate. For young 'uns that have trouble pulling the bolt back, you can tie a nice leather thong around it.

If you want something that can "scale up", check out the 10/22 and slap a youth stock on it!

If you want something that can "scale up", check out the 10/22 and slap a youth stock on it!

+1 on the Cricket. The single shot action teaches them the mechanics of the gun as well as concentrating on the accuracy of that single shot. My two girls learned to shoot with a Cricket.

Before our grandson was born, we bought him a Rossi Triple Play. A single youth sized gun with 3 barrels - .22, .223, and .410. Rossi has since discontinued it, but you can still find them used.

BTW, he has just turned 3, and hasn't even seen it yet. You have lots of time to shop.

Forgot to add, we also gave him a life membership to the NRA on his first birthday. He wasn't too impressed at the time, but it certainly annoyed the bejeebers out of the liberal in-laws, so was more than worth the price!

...I'll vote for the 10/22 in stainless with a youth stock...save the fullsize, lay back a coupla mags...and you've given him a gun that'll last him all his life(or her) and taught him about magazines and clearing a weapon properly...chances of him using a bolt action aren't as great these days...unless he's a big game hunter...don't think there's much chance of him growing up to be a liberal, either!!!

I have also been looking at the cricket for my daughter, I strongly perfer the single shot rifle for accuracy and safety reasons. At what age do you plan teaching the grand-kid to shoot?

I looked online at Cricket for my son last summer as his 10th b-day present. (the rifle and his 1st range trip) I ended up, however, with a Marlin .22 that fit him just right. We got that in person at the Big Town gun show in Mesquite. It's not single shot, but it is easy to operate and clean and fit him very well. Granted, the OP won't have the luxury of taking the kiddo for a "fitting" for a few years yet. Can you imagine him wheeling the grandson around in his stroller past the knife, gun, and pepper spray booths?

Rossi makes one. Maybe the Cricket, not sure. Break open single shot, comes with .22 barrel and 410ga barrel and a nice carry case. Cousin bought one for his daughter and I got to shoot it. Accurate and safe but man that 410 has some grunt in such a little gun.

How about that Marlin lever 22? henry makes a similar one. I'd get him something that is not going to lose it's appeal once he gets older.

A buddy of mine gave me a hot pink cricket for my 40th as a joke. I actually like the gun, it's single shot, single load and can even mount a scope if you buy their scope mount. Anyhow i highly recommend it, and don't forget to sign your grandson up for the Jimmy cricket club......just like I did for my buddy as payback.

hmm, Dad started me off with a break open single shot .410 when I was 10. I carried that for 2 years before I moved up to the .22 (For some reason, dad worried about .22 cal holes in the irrigation pipe out at the farm, the .410 didn't have enough punch at range to dent the pipe). Good old Marlin Model 60. Great little small game/plinking rifle.

Congrats on becoming a Grandpa.

As far as ab first .22 goes, I went with the Henry Mini Bolt. It's very similar to the cricket with a few upgrades. The reason I went with it is the cross bolt safety. That was a requirement of the wife before she would let me buy a rifle for the kids. It's a great shooter.
