Another Gun in a Backpack Goes Off

A gun in a 10th-grader’s backpack accidentally discharged when he dropped the bag, wounding two students at a high school Tuesday, Los Angeles police and school

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound and a 15-year-old boy suffered a neck wound. Both were hit with the same bullet.

“He said, ‘I’m sorry,’ when the gun went off. It made it appear to the teacher that is was an accident, authorities said.

Another gun in backpack story. This one didn't go off. Two Albuquerque middle school students have been arrested after police found a handgun and ammunition in a backpack and school locker.

I've been trying to wrap my head around how these guns are "going off" and it dawned on me that if I put my keys in my book bag (I often do), they always have pens, highlighters, paperclips, and pencils jammed in the ring when I pull them out. I suppose the gun is put in there with no holster and all type of junk gets jammed in the trigger guard and when a book pushes on that fat highlighter in the trigger guard-Bada Bang. Just a theory.

Or...little Johnny has his hand in the backpack playing with the gun and when it goes off he drops the pack. Perceptions get distorted when traumatic incidents happen, so everyone assumes it went off when the bag hit the floor and little Johnny reinforces that (he sure ain't gonna say...I was fiddling with the trigger).

All of this could be avoided by teaching gun safety in the classroom. Instead of passing out free condoms they could pass out free holsters.

Keep in mind the exact same thing can and does happen in peoples' pockets when they carry an unholstered gun in the same place as other items. When those go off, the results are always up close and personal.

I once pocket carried my Bersa 9 in a Nemesis pocket holster all day with the hammer pull back. I didn't know that the corner of my pocket had cocked it on the way in (I had awkwardly jammed it in my pocket in a seated position). I'll never make that mistake again, but the pocket holster and the fact that there was nothing else in that pocket kept if from "going off" while cocked and unlocked.

Nah-Just require that the guns be holstered in a dedicated compartment.

Your pocket holster and otherwise empty pocket kept a dangerous situation from becoming much worse.

I've found that using careful practices as a routine often allows one to emerge from a single unusual situation or mistake with a "lesson learned" close call instead of an out and out disaster.

They do care for the children. They want to make sure that the children are fully indoctrinated every step of the way so that they become the little clones that they are intended to be. They teach kids about the good things (drugs, pre-martial sex) and to stay way from bad things (religion, guns).

It would be interesting to find out how many adults are prosecuted as a result of these kinds of kids getting unrestricted access to a firearm. Little Johnny cannot get a gun to put in his backpack if they are secured. I do realize that guns are available on the street but the kids with the recent backpack problems seem too young yet to be able to tap into the street source.

In my small town high school where absolutely no incidents had ever happened, they did just that my senior year. It is very inconvenient for students, we had little time between classes and had to go to our lockers between each one for our books, made for a lot of tardies.
