Decisions Decisions... which 1911?

As a few of you may already know by the classifieds I'm gearing up to get a new pistol.

I'm basically stuck at a crossroads between three pistols. I will be using this to shoot CDP division and nightstand duty.

Sig 1911 TacOps
Pros: Comes w Ergo grips, checkered frontstrap, magwell extension and 4 mags
Cons: Don't know if it will fit in my(or any) 1911 holsters also right at weight limit for CDP

Colt XSE Government Pros: Match grade Trigger and Barrel, one piece guide rod
Cons: smooth front strap, will have to add/change a few things.

Colt XSE Rail gun Pros: Comes w/ match trigger, Match barrel and rail
Cons: don't know if it will fit my(or any) 1911 holsters due to rail. Smooth frontstrap, will have to add/change a few things.

Anyone have any personal experience with the Sig TacOps 1911? Read some bad reviews and also read some great ones.

I've shot Colts and think that I'm really stuck between the two Colts. Anyone know if the XSE Rail Gun will fit into regular 1911 holsters or am I going to have to get new holsters?

I really like the rail guns, and I think youll need new holsters, but that shouldn't deter you IMO.

Well, with those choices, you are not going to make a bad decision. You will likely need a different holster for a rail gun. I love Colt, so my biased opinion is to go with XSE Rail model. I have shot the Sig Platinum 1911, though not the TacOps model. The Sig 1911 I have shot was extremely nice. You will be a winner with any of these guns so might as well buy American I guess.

My rail gun fits a serpa retention holster, but not my blade tech holster, so you'll probably need a holster for the rail gun.

Of the 3, I would go with the Colt rail gun.

However...

IMO, STI is the way to go for all 1911 needs outside of a complete custom job.

STI is a Texas company that makes their guns right here in Texas, by Texans, FOR Texans and those in the know outside the Republic. They also heavily support the shooting sports.

Really love my Colt Rail Gun. Its currently my go-to gun for both carry and range fun. Though I can't really recommend IWB on a regular basis for it (OWB seems fine). Tucker Gunleather had no problem setting me up with a couple of holsters for her.

One more CON for the SIG is it has a less desirable external extractor. If it works it works but I have heard of several complaints about reliability.

That's odd... In their P220 & P226 X-Fives, it's the internal extractors that you have to watch out for; the external ones work great. I wonder why it would be the other way around in their 1911s?

Kimber also had a run of guns with external extractors that were not the most reputable firearms. They went back to the internal style within a year or so.

Yeah, I remember hearing about that. At the time, I thought it was a mark against Kimber. I'd figured, all else being equal, external extractors were always more reliable (A bunch of people on sigforum were having issues with internal extractors in their P220 Super Matches & P226 X-Fives. Plus, it seems like most of the newer designs use external extractors, and there must be a reason, right?), so what's wrong with them that they can't get it together? Then, in the same thread about the P226 X-Fives, someone commented that (paraphrasing) "Sig had copied the extractor from their Pro & SP2022 lines, and it works great in those guns." That's when I realized I was wrong about external extractors always being better, and oddly enough I've seen more of them since then (amazing what happens when you pay attention, eh?).

I still don't know why internal vs external makes a reliability difference, though, and that bothers me.

I am contemplating the exact same thing. I will say that the SIG TACOPS offers a LOT for the money. Night sights, magwell, ERGO grips, 4 mags,checkerd front strap etc... I actually have a threaded barrel model on layaway at Buds right now. Got an email yesterday that they had a black Colt Rail gun in stock but it was gone before I could buy it. I figured up how much it would cost to rig the Colt out with the same items and it would cost over $1600 to get it to have comparable features to the SIG.

I'm going to buy both and see which one tickles my fancy and sell the least desirable one.

Well I've finally think that I've decided to get a STI Trojan 5.0 in .45 caliber. Has most of the features I want and supposed to be a real tack driver.

Change my mind, put a Sig TacOps 1911 on order today, will pick it up next week.
