Got a little something for woods carry

Added a 6inch factory barrel from Glock. It's ugly but it does the job. Glock told me to expect 60-120fps gain depending on the load used. Not much but hey it was an excuse to make my first mod. My better half and I will be backpacking and camping in the Rocky's. Didn't want to carry a rifle and I didn't want to get another gun just yet seeing that I just got the P95 a week ago. Later on I plan to get the Lone Wolf barrel when I start to reload. Of course this isn't my first line of defense against smokey the bear. I have some counter assault bear spray I picked up at REI today as my first method to deter a bear or other aggressive animal we might encounter.I will carry these three loads in the 10mm.

-Winchester silvertip 175 grainjhp
- Hornady 200 grain xtp ( supposed 21inches of penetration in Gel from a S&W 1076 with 4.25 barrel)
-Double Tap 200 grain hardcast gas checked (mike at double tap told me to expect around 75-100fps gain with the 6inch barrel, 16 rounds of 1375-1400fps hardcast with 30-40inches of penetration if needed)

In case of emergency, climb a tree.

If the Bear comes up the tree after you, it's a black Bear.

If it stands on the ground waiting for you to fall down, it's a Grizzly Bear.

I heard that one already but it’s still funny. Actually many bear attacks have been stopped with the spray in real life. The most famous bear attack being Jack Hanna in Glacier National if I am not mistaken. I won't be going into a well known grizzly bear area so I am actually more worried about mountain lions, moose, fox, coyotes, wolf etc. All of which I think the 10mm can dispatch with proper shot placement if they don't kill me first.

These are more common to attack then bears but if I encountered a grizzly or other type of brown bear I would definitely not want to use the 10mm unless no other option was left. I wouldn’t be comfortable with a .44 mag. I think it would kill me even if I did unload a mag into it before it died. Large caliber rifles with heavy bullets are better for these guys but I have heard that many carry Glock 20s in Alaska for Grizzly protection, which I would never do after seeing one off in a distance. Huge!!! They dwarf a black bear and don’t scare easily unlike some of the black bears.

I think it would also drop a black bear pretty quick with proper shot placement but it might take a while for it to lose its fight if not hit just right and by then cc Italian tartar. There will be plenty of black bears in Colorado and New Mexico.

In all likelihood I am more likely to fall off a cliff, get shot by a human or probably struck by lighting. Then again why do we all carry? In case the “what if” ever happens on an unlikely chance. If anything it gives me piece of mind and the option to defend myself.

10mm is a good round, but given a choice between that and a .44 magnum on a backpacking trip, I'd take the magnum. Way more horsepower, and not really that bad to shoot in a large framed revolver.

Hey, I wanted a Super Redhawk but I already spent my quota this month between the p95 and Glock barrel. They Glock 20 is somewhere between the .357 and .41 mag in ballistics so its not weak but I am not going to say its more then it really is. Some guys say its .41 mag like with a long barrel in the lighter grains but the bottom line is it is limited in grains to 230, where the .41 mag goes to almost 300grains.

All I know is that if I were going backpacking and I were going to take a pistol along, it would be my Model 29 in .44 magnum. I loves me all my other semiauto pistols and revolvers, but a N Frame .44 with a 5" barrel is just about a perfect all around camp gun.

.44 would have been my choice to. I think the .44 Redhawk with a 4.2 or 5.5 barrel would be a nice backpack carry in the woods.

Well, if I were ever to go into grizzly country (probably never will) I would probably take my little (44 oz.) snubby Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull although it probably would not do well in the velocity department in a 2.50 in. barrel (big bang/lots of fire) so I guess I will just keep it handy around here for that rabid skunk and the like. Oh, its loaded with 45 colt. Just thinking of having 454 in it hurts my hand/wrist/arm/teeth, etc.

I have read in gun rags that most locals in Alaska carry either big caliber bolt-action rifles or shotguns with 00 bucks and slugs. I have read that many Grizzly attacks were stopped with buckshots to the face at near point-blank distance.

I just came back last weekend from a 41 mile cross country hike through the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. I saw several black bears including a momma with two cubs, but they all took off in the opposite direction when the saw me and I was very careful not to do anything that a bear could consider threatening. The bear spray is a very good idea and has worked effectively in many cases. Your 10mm should be plenty sufficient.
I only brought a bond arms in .45 colt and a few extra .410 shot shells. Not the best choice, but I was going a long way and wanted to keep the weight down. You should be fine, but watch out for unusual animal behavior. The drought has somewhat limited food choices and I did notice animals like skunks were a lot less spooky than normal.
Have fun, be safe, and make sure someone knows your intended hike trails so that they can find you in the event of an emergency.

Shot some Buffalo Bore 10 mm/ 180 grain rated at 1350 fps and 730'nrg (41 mag velocities) through the chrono and it was on the money as far as velocity goes. Sorry to say the Double Tap in 155/165 grains averaged 150 to 200'fps slower then what was printed on box.

Thanks, I already know about the DT not being what they advertise. I don't like the Buffalo bore either because while the 180 grain is fast and delivers the fps as advertised they use the cheaper Montana gold bullets instead of the gold dots like the always used to. That and the buffalo bore is way overpriced! My friend has a chronograph and the DT are usually 100-150fps less then advertised but that is still way faster then Corbon(way overpriced as well and use nosler on most loads) or any .40 S&W load. My biggest disappointment is with the quality of bullets most are using. They are all not using gold dots and xtps. These are the two best for 10mm and they are all being replaced by Montana golds, nosler etc. Noslers are ok but Montana golds are cheap for hollowpoints and regularly just don't expand and act like FMJ. Georgia arms offers a uni-core Speer bullet which is very good but they are usually out and Reeds ammo and research offers gold dots but there is a huge waiting list. The one company that exceeds the faster fps is the factory Hornady xtp bullets from Hornady. My friend chronographed as much as 50fps higher then factory and all ran faster then advertised by at least 20fps. Good stuff.
