Yesterday my wife, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and his girlfriend all signed up to take the CHL course. I have been trying to get my wife to for a year now.
Anyone know who runs carryagun.com in grand prarie? That's who they signed up with, I made sure they were taking the Texas 10 hour course but I don't know anything about the instructor.

You may bring your UNOADED gun, in a case/gun bag to the range and to class, however we will secure your weapon with our instructor upon entry to the classroom for the duration of classroom portion of instruction.

Spelling ("UNOADED") aside, my instructors did not require us to secure our weapons with the instructors during the class. That's bunk. Bring an unloaded gun in a proper carry container, and trust that the student is adult enough to not go waving a loaded gun around in the classroom. That, or leave it secured in the car. I'm not going to be treated like I don't know what I'm doing.

When I took my class from a prominent attorney, forum operator, and NRA Board member, I had my handgun holstered and concealed like every other day.

In fairness to the instructor, "concealed means concealed", so I can't attest to whether he knew I had the gun or not. Unholstering it at the range and swapping out SD ammo mags for range ammo mags might have been a clue, but there were a lot of people on the range.

Given the shaky hands and student guns pointed at the backs of heads in my TX class, I would have been more than happy to have my CHL instructor take possession of every gun brought to class until that gun is confirmed to be unloaded and no ammo is available in the classroom. I sat in the back of the room during my TX class for just this reason. I would not have been even slightly offended if my instructor had treated all of us unknown shooters as neophytes, because most of us were. And I was worried. YMMV

There was one guy at the CHL class I took that brought his weapon into the classroom in a hard case. The instructor promptly and politely asked him "Sir, is there a weapon in that case?". Student replied "Yes." Instructor response "Please take that back out to your vehicle until we get to the shooting range." Students response, "It's unloaded." Instructors response....a I don't give a dang stare. Student walked his cased weapon back outside without another word spoken.

I feel there is no need for a new CHL student to have a gun in class, cased or not, unless the instructor requests you bring it in so they can help you familiarize yourself with it under strict guidelines. The problem you have is there are many people who come to CHL classes that are not as familiar as they should be with a firearm. In turn, they will end up pulling it out of the case to show someone or brag about it. At the range, the RSO's can deal with unsafe handling issues a lot better than in the classroom.

Bottom line, leave it in the car until you get to the range. (Not talking about CHL's there for renewal who are already carrying concealed and leave it there.)
