New comer Guide to Austin?

Post by Beiruty »

I only visited Austin couple times. So, I am not very familiar with Austin Area.

Assume, I will be moving to Austin and I need to buy a house.

Of interest would be somewhere close to Oak hill area

Where are the best area in Austin.
1) Best public schools
2) Safe Area of course
3) Scenic and quiet
4) Shopping malls accessible
5) well run cities. i.e. low school/city taxes.
6) Median house hold income +$100K to $250k (real estate affordability)

Thanks

Ouch, can't help ya...I live in the NE part. Oak Hill is over in the Bee Cave area, so as long as you can find a home to afford, you're all set :)

Where are the best area in Austin.
1) Best public schools

Westlake (Eanes ISD)
Lakeway (Lake Travis ISD)
Westwood High School (Round Rock ISD)
Leander ISD also generally good

2) Safe Area of course

most west and north burbs very safe

3) Scenic and quiet

west side and areas by the lakes
4) Shopping malls accessible

Multiple choices south, west, and north

5) well run cities. i.e. low school/city taxes.

I really like Cedar Park. Not familiar enough with southern and western burbs

6) Median house hold income +$100K to $250k (real estate affordability)

easier question to answer is your home price range?

Thanks

OK, that helps. In most of the areas of Austin I mentioned you're looking at $100/sq ft and up (WAY up in Eanes/Westlake areas). $250K-$350K range for 3,000+ sq ft can still be found in my stomping grounds up north - Cedar Park, Round Rock, etc.

Also I believe you can still find that range in areas a bit further southwest like Dripping Springs etc, but again I'm not nearly as familiar with the south and west sides.

PM me if you'd like some more info.

Varies widely by area, but generally speaking in the established burbs that are reasonably close in (as opposed to "out there in the sticks") you're looking at 1/8 to 1/4 acre - with 1/3 acre being tops in most established or planned neighborhoods. There are some larger oddballs out there, but they're needle-in-a-haystack frequency at that price range.

Austin is basically the most expensive real estate in Texas if comparing apples-to-apples size & amenities with other Texas cities.

Sounds like you could borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor by both parties just opening their kitchen windows and passing it through.
