There are Youtube videos showing how to do it. It seems quite simple and straightforward.

Here is one example: S&W Internal Lock Removal

When I bought a Springfield Armory 1911, the first thing I did was replace the mainspring and housing with stock 1911 parts to get rid of the SA internal locking system.
