WTB .410 Shotgun

My manager is looking for a .410 shotgun for sale.

.410's are very inexpensive. Not sure what your manager's purpose is, but with a .410 might want to try a good pawn shop. Even at retail could probably pick one up for $250 or less. Another item: .410 shells are expensive. He might want to consider a 20 guage where shells are a lot cheaper. Not much difference in recoil...

He told me that he saw them at Academy for $120, $500 and $1000 (roughly), and is hoping to find one better than the $120 but less expensive (used) than the higher cost ones.
The idea is that his 8 year old son wants to shoot, he has been shooting pistols for about 8 months. The 8yo's dad has a 12 gauge, which the boy shot, but its too much, so he was thinking 20gauge or 410, but he thought the 410 might be easier on the boy than the 20g.

Yes, the .410 will have less recoil. IMO...try again when the kid is 10 years old. Too many dads want their child to be an adult too quick. They grow up too quick anyway without parents encouraging them.

The child's age or size is not what counts—it's his level of physical development. Some 8-year-olds are skinny minnies. Some are ready for varsity football.

Probably anyone who weighs over 100 pounds and has a normal physique can handle a 20-gauge shotgun. The shells are far cheaper, allowing for more practice. We're talking maybe $5 per 25 for 20-gauge versus $15 for .410.

The cost of the shotgun is trivial (unless you're talking about one of those English or Italian works of art). I probably have put $2,000 worth of ammo through a $200 shotgun.

Tom Estep is an excellent shotgun instructor, BTW. If your acquaintance wants, Tom can start the boy out with one of his shotguns that he thinks is appropriate.

Physical development is only part of it... The most important thing is mental: judgment, responsibility, safety awareness, knowing right from wrong, the list goes on and on...

I agree that mental maturity is important; but the question is what gauge or caliber is suitable, not whether the boy can shoot responsibly.

Some 8-year-olds probably are more responsible than adults of legal age. Once they master childish impulsiveness, they are more open to instruction than older children or adults.

Also we're taking about target shooting with adult supervision. I doubt the kid will be riding his bike around Friendswood with a shotgun slung over his shoulder. I know there was a time when that was unremarkable, but that was a long time ago.

very correct Jim.
I have taken him (and his dad) to the range, and his dad has taken him many times.
He has learned gun safety and practices it all the time.
He will not be shooting without adult supervision.

I will pass on all of the advice above to my manager and he will have to decide the best course

Tell him to fork over $200 for a Rossi .410 .22lr conversion gun. You swap the barrels out and you're good to go with whatever you want. My little brother got one for his birthday and he loves it.

FWIW I do have a .410 I am looking to rehome... It is what I used to learn to shoot skeet with my dad, but have other shot guns, and would really like to make room in the safe. It is a Model 59A Stevens. I know I can't get much for it, so have kinda dawdled selling it.
