I put a free-float handguard from Rock River Arms on my AR when I built it. That particular model only comes in Mid and Rifle Length, but if you're going with a low-profile gas block it should work like you're looking to do. It gives you a nice quad rail while still having a good area for a handhold:

I've got a 16" heavy barrel with a mid-length gas system on mine, and it has the mid-length handguard on it. Here's my rifle, to give you an idea:
