Happy Confederate Heros Day Jan 19th

Official Texas state Holiday. Confederate Hero's day.

I post a song that speaks perfectly for the spirit of the day (click the link at the top to hear the tune:
THE WEARIN’ OF THE GRAY

The fearful struggle’s ended now, and peace smiles on our land

And tho we’ve yielded, we have proved ourselves a faithful band.

We fought them long, we fought them well, we fought them night and day

And bravely struggled for our rights while wearin’ of the Gray!

And now that we have ceased to fight and pledged our sacred word

That we against the Union’s might no more will draw the sword

We feel despite the sneers of those who never smelled the fray

That we’ve a manly honest right to wearin’ of the Gray.

Our Cause is lost, no more we fight ‘gainst overwhelmin’ power.

All wearied are our limbs and drenched with many a battle shower.

We feign would rest for want of strength and yield them up the day

And lower the flag so proudly borne while wearin’ of the Gray.

Defeat is not dishonor; No, of honor not bereft.

We should thank God that in our breast this priceless boon is left.

And tho we weep just for those braves who stood in proud array

Beneath our flag and nobly died while wearin’ of the Gray.

When in the ranks of war we stood and faced the deadly hail

Our simple suits of Gray composed our only coats of mail.

And on those awful hours that marked the bloody battle day

In memory we will still be seen a wearin’ of the Gray.

O, should we reach that glorious place where waits the sparklin’ crown

For everyone who for the right his soldier’s life lay down,

God grant to us the privilege upon that happy day

Of clasping hands with those who fell a wearin’ of the Gray.

I want to add that I think the confederate's pro-slavery and racial inequality stance is immoral and evil. We still have traces of this evil in our society, and it is not limited to the original CSA states.

All the shooters I've had the good fortune to meet and talk to have been excellent folks who see beyond skin color.

Coming from a fairly military background family, I think soldiers can get caught up in conflicts without fully understand the actual cause and many times really have no choice. Therefore, I have no problems w/ this holiday (if my company would give me a day off that'd be better though).

You demonstrate a profound ignorance of the issues involved in the War of Northern Agression.

The South was fighting to defend against the big brother government that now bears down on us so heavily...

Today some of us celebrate the Convivium remembering the birthday of Gen'l. Robert Edward Lee of Old Virgina... a man of greatness, humanity and honor.

I hope you're equally opposed to the Union's pro-slavery and racial inequality stance.

You do know that there were slave states in the Union, right? And that the "Emancipation Proclamation", which many believe "freed the slaves", specifically excluded slaves in Union territory.

Just checking.

Slavery was evil and a moral outrage. The war that ended the official practice was far worse. Instead of freeing slaves, it made slaves of us all.

In addition to that, many Northern states, including Illinois (the land of lincoln), had laws that either forbade blacks, slave or free, from entering their states or had penalties against them for being there. The "Free State" or "Free Soil" crowd that wanted the western territories free of slavery, like Lincoln himself, mean't that they wanted the West preserved as a "white man's land." AND after the War proceeded to make it just that by turning the Indian wars into wars of extermination. It was Union General Phil Sheridan who said "the only good indians I ever saw were dead."

j1132s,
Since you are in Texas, a Southern state, and are on a Texas forum you are going to find A LOT of people in here that are highly sympathetic to the Southern Cause and see it as the same cause of their ancestors that fought with Sam Houston and Wm. Travis a generation earlier as well as Geo. Washington and Thomas Jefferson in 1776.

If you do not agree, that's your priviledge. You are free to believe and say what you wish, I can't tell you not to. But I do ask that you (and anyone else who may disagree) not turn this thread into a flame war about what the war was about or who was right or a racial debate. Just let those of us who wish, pay homage to our ancestors and their principles.

While you do seem to disagree with what the Confederacy stood for, I do sincerely appreciate your respect for the men who fought and died on the fields.

The rest of us,
Let's not continue to jump on j1132s for his belief. As I said, let's don't turn this into a flame war that gets good threads closed. Remember, the title is "Happy Confederate Heros Day" not "To hell with the damn Yankees day" Let's keep it positive.

Great article KBCraig. Thanks for posting the link.
and he was that rarity among Civil War commanders: He never wrote his memoirs.
While this is true, I believe it was his son Rooney Lee who said that Lee had planned to write his memoirs in order to tell the story of the Army of Northern Virginia but passed on before he could do this.
