Little lesson about "cover"
Some of you might find this interesting.
http://www.theboxotruth.com/ Look at "The Buick O' Truth" section at the bottom right.
It seems that auto windshields and even the body itself offer almost no protection from bullets!
So while you would be resonably safe inside your vehicle from an UNARMED attacker, someone with a gun would pose a BIG danger.
I found it very interesting and educational.

I like Kevin's answer, but I was also going to point out that we teach cadets that the only area to rely on in a car is the engine block or the tires and rims if it is sideways through both. It is amazing how hard it is to penetrate both sides of a tire, but a rifle will do it. I have not yet seen small arms that will go all of the way though both tires on a car.
Of course, if you buy a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, they now come with an option for kevlar panels in the left front or both front doors. That may change our tactics if we are using a car so equipped. A concern is to change the tactics and then forget to change back on the next car that is not equipped.
